The University Square: A New Icon for Campus Life

Transforming PolyU’s heart with green space and vibrant community interaction

The University Square by the Campus Development Office redefines campus landscapes, blending heritage preservation with innovative social spaces to foster community and connection at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The University Square stands as a testament to the evolving needs of academic environments, transforming a previously underutilized area into a 2,200-square-meter pedestrian-friendly lawn. This expansive green space now serves as the symbolic and functional heart of the PolyU campus, offering both a serene retreat and a dynamic venue for large-scale events. The design’s openness encourages spontaneous gatherings and new modes of social interaction, reflecting a shift in campus planning towards inclusivity and connectivity.

Central to the project’s identity is the thoughtful integration of two veteran trees, preserved and celebrated as focal points within the lawn. Custom timber seating decks, handcrafted on site, wrap around these trees, providing inviting gathering spots that blend artistry with utility. The irregular shapes and warm tones of the decks add visual interest while supporting flexible use, from quiet study sessions to lively group discussions. This harmonious blend of heritage and modernity sets a new standard for campus design, enhancing the sense of belonging among students and staff.

The realization of The University Square required innovative approaches to both design and construction. Rather than prioritizing new academic buildings, the Campus Development Office reimagined open space as a vital asset, supporting both relaxation and major campus events such as graduation ceremonies and cultural celebrations. The project’s phased construction schedule, compressed into the summer holiday period, overcame significant challenges, including record-breaking rainfall in Hong Kong. Flexible work strategies ensured minimal disruption to campus life and maintained seamless pedestrian flow.

Research into student behavior played a pivotal role in shaping the project. Observations revealed a strong desire among the younger generation for spaces where they can both see and be seen, fostering social engagement in public areas. The open layout, tree-lined decks, and accessible design elements respond directly to these preferences, creating an environment that is both welcoming and functional. The result is a space that not only enhances campus aesthetics but also aligns with contemporary social trends, making it a model for future institutional landscapes.

The University Square’s impact has been recognized with the Iron A' Landscape Planning and Garden Design Award in 2025, honoring its practical innovation and contribution to a better campus experience. As a new iconic center for PolyU, the project exemplifies how thoughtful landscape architecture can elevate community life, promote sustainability, and celebrate the unique heritage of a place.
