Cl7A stands as a testament to the art of restoration, where Serlyn Tan’s vision honors the storied past of a classic shophouse while introducing modern sophistication. The project began with a commitment to preserve the soul of the original structure, carefully retaining architectural details such as the pitched ceiling and exposed timber rafters. This approach ensures that the essence of the home’s history remains intact, even as the space is transformed for contemporary living.
The 978-square-foot walk-up apartment is designed for those who cherish connection and hospitality. An open-concept layout creates a seamless flow between the kitchen, living, and dining areas, fostering an inviting atmosphere ideal for gatherings. Personal touches—soft drapes, curated artwork, and a bookshelf filled with memories—imbue the space with warmth and character, making it more than just a residence but a true home for shared moments.
Materiality plays a pivotal role in Cl7A’s unique identity. The use of polished concrete flooring introduces an industrial edge, while natural elements like warm wood and elegant granite provide depth and contrast. Strong architectural lines and bold textures evoke a masculine aesthetic, yet the space remains approachable and comfortable through thoughtful, softer details. This balance of old and new, hard and soft, is central to the apartment’s enduring appeal.
Serlyn Tan’s design research focused on integrating heritage features with modern functionality, demonstrating that preservation and innovation can coexist harmoniously. By maintaining original elements and introducing minimalist detailing and advanced materials, the home achieves both spatial efficiency and sustainability. This approach contributes to the ongoing discourse on adaptive reuse, offering a model for blending cultural legacy with modern needs.
The project, completed between September 2019 and October 2020, overcame significant challenges in restoring aged structures while enhancing usability and aesthetics. The result is a space that not only functions beautifully but also tells a story—one of heritage, hospitality, and thoughtful design. Cl7A’s recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 underscores its success in marrying tradition with innovation, setting a benchmark for residential architecture in Singapore and beyond.
Cl7A exemplifies how a home can serve as both a sanctuary and a celebration of history, inviting residents and guests alike to experience the beauty of connection, comfort, and cultural pride.
