The “Dawn” series draws its inspiration from the soft hues and serene atmosphere of early morning light. The designers, Wei Jingye and Yu Xiaowei, have translated this natural beauty into a set of furniture that includes a table and chair, both characterized by gentle curves and a calming color palette. The design pays homage to the iconic Chinese round chair, reinterpreted with a contemporary touch that highlights simplicity and elegance.
What sets the “Dawn” series apart is its fusion of tradition and modernity. The supporting structure is crafted from solid wood, utilizing CNC technology for precision and hand-polishing for a refined finish. The main body of each piece is 3D printed in a light blue shade, creating a striking contrast with the natural wood. This innovative approach not only preserves the essence of Chinese furniture but also introduces a fresh, agile aesthetic suited for modern interiors.
Functionality and comfort are central to the design. The ergonomic armrest and backrest, evolved from the traditional round chair, provide enhanced support for leisure activities such as reading, tea drinking, or relaxation. The plug-in assembly structure allows for easy transportation and flexibility in shaping, making the furniture both practical and adaptable to various living spaces.
Research for the “Dawn” series focused on integrating the dignified semantics of Chinese heritage with the versatility of 3D printed materials. Overcoming the challenge of merging ancient forms with contemporary technology, the team ensured that the final product delivers both structural integrity and user comfort. The result is a collection that stands as a testament to the evolution of Chinese furniture design.
Having commenced in Shenyang in January 2024 and completed by June 2024, the “Dawn” series was showcased at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts Museum. Its recognition with the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2025 underscores its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life, exemplifying best practices in art, science, and design.
The “Dawn” furniture series demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between past and present, offering pieces that are not only visually appealing but also enrich the modern lifestyle with cultural depth and innovative craftsmanship.
