Beyond Number: Humanizing Data Through Interactive Storytelling

Lei Ye’s platform transforms social justice statistics into personal narratives

Beyond Number reimagines how audiences engage with social justice data, turning raw statistics into immersive, reflective experiences that highlight the human stories behind the numbers.

Beyond Number, designed by Lei Ye, is an innovative web platform that challenges the conventional approach to social data. Inspired by the need to humanize statistics, the project draws from research in data ethics, visual storytelling, and the history of social movements. The platform was created for the 2024 Data for Black Lives (D4BL) Conference and exhibited at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, aiming to foster deeper public engagement with complex social issues.

Unlike traditional static infographics, Beyond Number offers a dynamic, interactive journey. Users explore curated datasets, interact with real-time visualizations, and create personalized digital posters that blend statistical insights with compelling narratives. This approach not only makes abstract data more tangible but also encourages users to reflect on the lived realities behind the figures. The platform’s minimalist design and intuitive user experience ensure accessibility across devices, making it easy for audiences to engage, create, and share their insights.

The technology behind Beyond Number combines HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and D3.js for advanced data visualization, with WebGL enhancing visual rendering. The platform supports real-time data processing and user-generated content export in PNG and SVG formats, integrating cloud-based storage for seamless sharing. This technical foundation allows for a responsive, scalable experience that adapts to both desktop and mobile environments.

Research played a critical role in shaping Beyond Number. Lei Ye’s team conducted literature reviews, case studies, and user testing to understand how interactive storytelling can drive awareness and emotional connection. Findings revealed that audiences are more likely to engage with and understand social justice issues when data is presented through personalized, narrative-driven experiences. This insight guided the platform’s development, ensuring that each interaction fosters meaningful reflection and dialogue.

One of the primary challenges faced during development was balancing data accuracy with emotional resonance. The team addressed this by carefully curating datasets, refining interaction flows, and optimizing visual hierarchy to maintain clarity without overwhelming users. Iterative user testing ensured that the platform remained both accessible and impactful, successfully bridging the gap between data and lived experience.

Recognized for its practical innovation and social impact, Beyond Number received the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its contribution to public awareness and volunteerism. By transforming data into stories, Lei Ye’s platform sets a new standard for digital engagement, encouraging audiences to look beyond numbers and connect with the human side of social justice.

For those interested in the intersection of design, technology, and social change, Beyond Number stands as a compelling example of how interactive platforms can make complex issues more accessible, relevant, and emotionally powerful.
