Kaigua: Tea Rituals Meet Modern Mysticism in Packaging

Chushan Design’s innovative tea bags blend I Ching wisdom with daily convenience.

Kaigua transforms the simple act of tea drinking into a ritual of inspiration, merging ancient Eastern divination with contemporary lifestyles through playful, interactive packaging.

Chushan Design’s Kaigua project redefines the tea experience for Generation Z, fusing the allure of astrology and the wisdom of the I Ching with the practicality of hanging ear tea bags. The design’s name cleverly plays on the dual meanings of “ear hook” for efficiency and “divination symbol” for spiritual resonance. By turning the act of tearing open a tea bag into a symbolic gesture of “activating luck,” Kaigua invites users to find both refreshment and inspiration in their daily routines.

The packaging centers on the concept of “open the box, activate luck,” featuring five I Ching hexagrams, each paired with a unique tea flavor. As hot water meets the bag, not only does the aroma of tea fill the air, but the promise of good fortune is also symbolically released. This approach bridges cultural gaps, making ancient Eastern philosophy accessible and engaging for a new generation of tea drinkers.

Kaigua’s realization prioritizes simplicity, efficiency, and environmental consciousness. The outer box uses a vibrant pink color and a hot-stamped Chinese character for strong visual impact, while adhesive stickers replace traditional printing to reduce waste. Inside, aluminum foil bags ensure freshness and portability, with ergonomic dimensions designed for single-handed use and travel convenience. This thoughtful balance of aesthetics, sustainability, and practicality reflects Chushan Design’s commitment to modern lifestyles.

The interactive element of Kaigua is central to its appeal. Users are encouraged to randomly select a tea bag, observe the hexagram, and read its interpretation, turning each cup into a moment of reflection and “cheat code activation.” This blend of practicality and ceremony addresses the needs of busy professionals, offering a quick yet meaningful tea ritual that fits seamlessly into the office environment.

Research for Kaigua involved surveying young professionals to understand how traditional tea rituals could be adapted for modern life. The findings highlighted a desire for products that combine cultural depth with convenience, leading to the creation of a new “mystical consumption” category. By simplifying the symbolism of the I Ching and associating it with intuitive icons and flavors, Kaigua makes ancient wisdom both accessible and enjoyable.

Kaigua’s success is further underscored by its recognition with a Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, celebrating its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life. Chushan Design’s innovative approach not only revitalizes tea culture but also sets a new standard for how tradition and technology can coexist in everyday products.

Kaigua stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, inviting users to savor both the flavor and the fortune in every cup, and transforming a daily habit into a moment of enlightenment.
