Theater House: Where Architecture Meets Performance

Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja crafts a home inspired by theatrical flow

Blending the dynamic spirit of a theater with residential comfort, Theater House in Jakarta reimagines the boundaries between performance, nature, and daily living.

Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja’s Theater House draws inspiration from the world of theater, translating its tiered seating and open stage into a split-level residential design. The central living space acts as the “stage,” seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor environments. Large openings allow light and air to move freely, creating a vibrant and healthy atmosphere. Natural materials, such as grey textured paint and wood, evoke the minimalist elegance of a theater set, while the terraced roof garden above offers a tranquil retreat for the private quarters upstairs.

The home’s unique split-level layout establishes a fluid connection between each area, from the poolside terrace to the multifunctional covered terrace. This design strategy fosters a sense of openness and continuity, making the living and dining room the heart of the house. Openings on both sides of this central hub provide unobstructed views and invite the outdoors in, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and connection with nature. A planter box above the entrance not only softens the visual transition from the street but also frames a lush garden view from within.

Materiality plays a crucial role in the realization of Theater House. The exterior features a special three-tone grey texture paint, artfully mimicking the look of natural concrete. Wooden planks and green landscaping elements are strategically placed to balance the cool tones and introduce warmth, ensuring the spaces remain inviting and comfortable. These choices support a naturally ventilated and sunlit environment, promoting sustainability and well-being for residents.

The upper floor is dedicated to private family spaces, including the master and children’s bedrooms, each with direct access to a terraced roof garden. This integration of greenery not only enhances privacy but also provides a serene escape, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The thoughtful arrangement of spaces and the interplay of materials reflect a commitment to both function and artistry, setting Theater House apart in Jakarta’s residential landscape.

With a total area of 20.5 by 10 meters and a building footprint of 15.4 by 10 by 12.7 meters, Theater House stands as a testament to innovative design and technical excellence. Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies how architecture can elevate everyday life, introducing a sense of wonder and amazement through spatial storytelling and creative vision.

Theater House by Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja demonstrates how residential architecture can be both a stage for daily life and a sanctuary for reflection, seamlessly merging performance, nature, and modern living.
