Kolompeh: Reviving Kerman’s Heritage Through Packaging Art

Traditional pastries meet modern design in Sajad Izadi’s award-winning Kolompeh packaging.

Kolompeh, a cherished pastry from Kerman, Iran, finds new life through Sajad Izadi’s innovative packaging design, blending cultural heritage with contemporary appeal and earning international recognition.

Kolompeh, a traditional pastry deeply rooted in the culture of Kerman, has long been a symbol of celebration and community. Sajad Izadi’s packaging design for the Reza brand reimagines this heritage, drawing inspiration from the city’s festive gatherings and ancestral attire. The illustrations on the packaging feature men with long mustaches and Persian patterns, evoking memories of Kerman’s vibrant history and social rituals. This artistic approach not only honors the past but also invites consumers to engage with the story behind the product.

The uniqueness of Kolompeh’s packaging lies in its fusion of tradition and health-conscious innovation. While many Iranian traditional products struggle for market relevance amid the rise of industrial foods, Kolompeh stands out with its use of grape syrup and date-filled centers, offering a natural, energizing alternative. The Reza brand’s commitment to quality and freshness is reflected in both the ingredients and the packaging, which aims to attract a new generation of consumers seeking authenticity and wellness.

Environmental responsibility is central to the realization of this design. The packaging employs water-based coatings on cardboard, ensuring eco-friendliness, while sharp, vibrant colors and gold accents convey a sense of premium value. Inside, food-grade wax paper maintains the pastries’ freshness and safety. The meticulous attention to both aesthetics and sustainability demonstrates a holistic approach to modern packaging design.

Interaction with the Kolompeh packaging is designed to be an artistic experience. The line art illustrations serve as the initial point of engagement, drawing the eye before revealing the product within. Each flavor is distinguished by its own color, creating a visual language that enhances shelf presence and consumer recognition. This strategy bridges the gap between art and commerce, positioning Kolompeh as more than just a pastry—it becomes a cultural artifact.

Research and development for this project highlighted a gap in the market: few products successfully integrate Iranian and Kermani art into their branding. Overcoming challenges such as maintaining cultural authenticity while appealing to younger audiences, the design team avoided realistic imagery in favor of evocative illustration. The result is a packaging solution that serves as a cultural bridge, making traditional art accessible and relevant in today’s marketplace.

Kolompeh’s packaging by Sajad Izadi has garnered international acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. This recognition celebrates the design’s ingenuity, technical excellence, and its role in enhancing quality of life by connecting consumers with the rich artistic heritage of Iran. The project stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in revitalizing tradition for a modern audience.
