As children progress through early developmental stages, their needs and interests evolve rapidly. 3 Khan, designed by Nastaran Akbari and Davood Manafi, addresses these shifting requirements with a versatile product that grows alongside its young users. This multifunctional piece not only adapts to a child’s changing activities but also encourages meaningful interactions between parents and children, countering the isolating effects of modern technology.
The unique properties of 3 Khan set it apart in the realm of children’s products. Designed for ages one to seven, it seamlessly transforms into a single table, double table, or a cottage. Each configuration supports a different aspect of play, learning, or family engagement. The product’s packaging, cleverly designed as a truck, adds another layer of imaginative play and practical storage.
Crafted primarily from plywood, 3 Khan features hand-painted illustrations inspired by the Shahnameh, the celebrated Persian epic. This artistic touch not only enriches the visual appeal but also introduces children to cultural storytelling. Aluminum sliding connectors enable easy transformation between configurations, ensuring both strength and flexibility without the need for mechanical tools.
Extensive research into children’s developmental needs and parental feedback informed the design process. The modular dimensions accommodate limited living spaces and budget constraints, while the assembly process itself fosters practical skills and family collaboration. By encouraging children to participate in building and transforming the product, 3 Khan nurtures creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.
Overcoming technical challenges was central to the project’s success. The design team experimented with various joint mechanisms, ultimately selecting sliding joints that provide secure, tool-free assembly. This solution ensures durability and ease of use, making the product accessible for both children and adults.
3 Khan stands as a testament to thoughtful, innovative design in children’s furniture. By integrating cultural heritage, multifunctionality, and developmental benefits, it offers families a meaningful tool for connection and growth. Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, 3 Khan exemplifies how design can contribute to a better, more engaging world for children and their families.
