Night of Celebration stands as a testament to the enduring allure of glass art, drawing inspiration from both historical craftsmanship and the ethereal beauty of clouds. Derya Geylani Vurusan’s vision for this piece originated from a desire to connect the past and present, using antique goblets as symbols of tradition and memory. The flowing forms of molten glass, inspired by the sky, represent the fluidity of time and the evolution of artistic expression.
The uniqueness of this artwork lies in its innovative technique. Antique glass goblets are embedded within a blown glass form, with hot glass seemingly pouring from these historical vessels. By pressing the mold of an antique goblet onto the heated, blown glass, a negative imprint is achieved, capturing both the essence of the original object and the transformative power of contemporary glassblowing. This process results in a harmonious blend of old and new, offering viewers a visual narrative of continuity and change.
The realization of Night of Celebration involves a meticulous series of steps. The artist first creates a concave projection by pressing the antique goblet mold onto the hot, freely blown glass. After cooling, the piece undergoes cutting, polishing, and is treated with a special solution to achieve a pearl-like finish. The final assembly involves gluing the processed form with the antique glass and splash elements, and the completed work is displayed as a wall installation. The dimensions—430 mm by 200 mm by 500 mm—underscore its presence as a striking contemporary sculpture.
This project is the result of extensive research and experimentation. By analyzing traditional glass-making methods and integrating them with modern techniques, Derya Geylani Vurusan demonstrates how innovation can coexist with heritage. The challenges faced during the process, particularly in achieving precise temperature control and accurate mold impressions, highlight the technical mastery required for such a creation. The outcome is a piece that not only preserves historical craftsmanship but also invites new interpretations and emotional connections.
Night of Celebration has garnered recognition for its artistic and technical excellence, earning a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025. Esteemed for its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life, the artwork exemplifies best practices in art, science, and design. Derya Geylani Vurusan’s achievement underscores the potential of contemporary glass art to honor tradition while embracing the possibilities of the present.
Through Night of Celebration, viewers are invited to reflect on the interplay between memory and innovation, witnessing how the language of glass can bridge generations and inspire future creativity.
