As the centerpiece of Yamaha Corporation’s ongoing reorganization, the new headquarters consolidates operations into a compact, city-center office while strengthening collaboration across the company’s facilities. This strategic relocation responds to the client’s vision for a workspace that not only embodies Yamaha’s brand image but also achieves high environmental performance and operational efficiency. The result is a headquarters that stands as both a functional hub and a symbol of Yamaha’s global leadership in musical innovation.
Distinctive architectural features set the building apart. A large overhanging volume at the lower level connects the new structure to the existing facility, creating a seamless network that encourages employee interaction and enhances organizational synergy. The symmetrical double-skin curtain wall, perched on a stable podium, reflects the sky and emphasizes the building’s verticality, while a dynamic pilotis space and two-story atrium invite natural light and movement. The upper terrace, with its wood deck and plantings, further strengthens the connection between people and nature.
Inside, the design philosophy is evident in a monochrome color palette, diverse materials, and biophilic elements. The Activity-Based Working (ABW) concept underpins the office layout, offering a variety of seating and work environments to foster autonomy and engagement among employees. Advanced technologies, such as the Yamaha Web Conference System, support seamless communication and collaboration across domestic and international sites.
Sustainability and resilience are central to the building’s realization. The structure employs seismic isolation and steel construction for safety and durability, while natural ventilation windows and fluid analysis ensure a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. Shading and wind simulations guided the building’s shape and planting plan, minimizing environmental impact and harmonizing the headquarters with its urban surroundings. These efforts contribute to the building’s ZEB (Zero Energy Building) credentials and its commitment to community well-being.
Obayashi Corporation overcame significant technical challenges to realize this vision. The base isolation structure ensures business continuity, while earthquake-resistant columns and cantilever beams provide both openness and rigidity. Innovative engineering solutions, such as low-friction bearings and SRC foundations, enable the building’s distinctive overhangs and smooth stress transmission, ensuring both safety and architectural expression.
The Yamaha Corporation Headquarters stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and engineering. Winner of the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2025, the project advances the art and science of workplace architecture, setting a new standard for innovation, sustainability, and organizational harmony.
