Serenity: A Multifunctional Cultural Venue Inspired by Heritage

Blending Sinology, sustainability, and art in a tranquil space

Serenity by Chiao Yi Tang and Wan Shih Yang reimagines the cultural venue as a harmonious convergence of history, art, and innovation, drawing inspiration from Chinese calligraphy and the architectural grandeur of the Forbidden City to create a sanctuary for contemplation and learning.

Serenity stands as a testament to the enduring influence of cultural heritage in contemporary design. Drawing from the literary and artistic pursuits of ancient scholars, the project channels the spirit of traditional calligraphy, paintings, and lecture halls. This approach not only honors the past but also addresses modern concerns such as sustainability and ecological awareness. The venue’s design reflects resilience and tranquility, inviting visitors to experience the depth of Chinese cultural essence in a setting that fosters peace and intellectual engagement.

At the heart of Serenity lies a unique integration of museum and digital library functions, with a particular focus on Sinology research. The space is meticulously crafted to evoke the fluidity and grace of calligraphy, using soft lighting and organic forms to create a calming atmosphere. Visitors are encouraged to reflect and gain insight, deepening their appreciation for both the humanities and the natural world. The philosophy of the mind is woven throughout the design, promoting clarity and a sense of belonging within the broader tapestry of life.

The architectural realization of Serenity is both innovative and environmentally conscious. The central building houses cultural relics and is surrounded by exhibition halls, a library, multimedia facilities, and a conference hall, all interconnected by thoughtfully designed lobbies, corridors, and communal spaces such as a coffee shop. Emphasis on natural light, energy efficiency, and the use of healthy materials has earned the project Taiwan’s prestigious Diamond level green building certification, underscoring its commitment to sustainable design.

Spanning approximately 6,537 square meters, the venue’s layout is inspired by calligraphic techniques—dense ink becomes solid, grounding forms; rendering creates dynamic, resonant spaces; and the “flying white” technique is translated into open, light-filled areas. The interplay of wood-textured ceilings, granite flooring, and Carrara marble landscape walls, complemented by latticed structures and bronze-like panels, symbolizes continuity and cultural depth. These elements collectively create a memory theater that bridges ancient traditions with modern sensibilities.

Serenity’s development, located within the Ching-Kuo Chi-Hai Cultural Park, unfolded in two phases from 2020 to 2024. The project is distinguished as Taiwan’s first presidential library, dedicated to the study of national leaders and historical contexts. Research for the design drew on extensive historical materials and case studies, ensuring that every aspect of the space resonates with academic rigor and cultural significance. The collaborative efforts of Chiao Yi Tang, Wan Shih Yang, and Yu Cheng Hung have resulted in a new social landmark that seamlessly integrates culture, history, and leisure.

Recipient of the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Serenity exemplifies excellence in interior space, retail, and exhibition design. Its thoughtful blend of tradition, technology, and sustainability not only elevates the visitor experience but also sets a new standard for cultural venues worldwide, making a meaningful contribution to the quality of life and the preservation of heritage.
