Serenity: A Harmonious Family Retreat by Pohui Lin

Blending Warmth and Elegance in a Japandi-Inspired Home

Serenity by Pohui Lin redefines residential design, merging cozy comfort with refined sophistication to create a tranquil family sanctuary in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Serenity stands as a testament to the art of balancing contrasting tastes within a family home. Pohui Lin, alongside designer JieYao Xu, drew inspiration from the unique preferences of a husband and wife—one favoring warm, earthy tones and textures, the other drawn to sleek finishes and neutral shades. The result is a gentle palette of muted colors and layered materials, forming a space that is both inviting and elegant. Designed for a growing family, the 118 m² residence seamlessly adapts to the needs of a toddler and a newborn, offering both communal and private spaces that nurture family bonds.

The home’s discreetly luxurious exterior features natural marble veining at the entry, setting a tone of understated elegance. Inside, the meticulous use of solid wood, water-stained oak, and natural stucco not only enhances visual warmth but also contributes to energy efficiency by controlling humidity. The design prioritizes sustainability, utilizing low-formaldehyde, low-VOC materials, and maximizing natural light to create a healthy, eco-friendly environment. Each material junction is sanded to perfection, reflecting the designer’s dedication to flawless craftsmanship.

Functionality lies at the heart of Serenity’s layout. The versatile central hub serves as a workspace for the husband and a play area for the toddler, while a private room awaits the newborn’s arrival, ensuring peace and adaptability. Open pathways encourage spontaneous family interactions, while thoughtful zoning preserves privacy when needed. This fluidity allows the home to evolve with the family’s changing needs, embodying the principles of Japandi design—where simplicity meets comfort and luxury.

Research played a crucial role in shaping Serenity. Through in-depth interviews and observation of daily routines, the design team identified the importance of open layouts and flexible spaces in promoting family well-being. 3D modeling and iterative sketches helped refine the flow, ensuring every corner supports both togetherness and individual retreat. The project overcame creative challenges by harmonizing diverse aesthetic preferences, ultimately delivering a space that feels both nurturing and sophisticated.

Serenity’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. Awarded Bronze in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, the project exemplifies best practices in art, science, and technology. Its discreet luxury, sustainable materials, and adaptable design contribute to improved quality of life, setting a new standard for residential interiors that prioritize both beauty and function.

Serenity by Pohui Lin offers a blueprint for future homes—spaces where harmony, adaptability, and quiet luxury foster lasting family connections and well-being.
