Rhythm: Capturing Dance in Sculptural Motion

Zhuoyun Xiao’s installation fuses clown performance with contemporary art

Inspired by the expressive gestures of dance and clowning, Zhuoyun Xiao’s “Rhythm” transforms fleeting movement into a striking series of cherry wood sculptures, offering a fresh perspective on the intersection of performance and visual art.

“Rhythm” stands as a testament to the power of art to freeze motion, translating the dynamic energy of dance—specifically the exaggerated expressions found in clown performances—into tangible, sculptural forms. Zhuoyun Xiao, working at Nanjing University of the Arts between 2023 and 2024, drew upon traditional performance art, reinterpreting it through the lens of contemporary sculpture. The installation explores how static objects can evoke the sensation of movement, inviting viewers to engage with the work as if tracing the arc of a dance in progress.

The series comprises five cherry wood sculptures, each ranging in height from 150mm to 350mm, arranged sequentially to create a visual rhythm. Strategic use of black, white, and red accents—applied through a specialized CMYK color system—emphasizes key transition points, guiding the viewer’s eye along the installation. The deliberate spacing and varying heights of the pieces amplify the sense of motion, transforming the static forms into a narrative of frozen gestures. This approach not only highlights the physicality of dance but also bridges the gap between traditional and modern artistic expressions.

The realization of “Rhythm” involved meticulous craftsmanship, with each element precision-cut and hand-finished to achieve a harmonious balance between form and function. The deconstruction methodology employed by Zhuoyun Xiao allowed for the abstraction of clown movements into sculptural language, while the use of sustainably harvested cherry wood and non-toxic finishes underscores a commitment to environmental responsibility. The complete installation measures 600mm by 800mm by 300mm and weighs approximately 4.5kg, making it both substantial and accessible for public spaces.

Research for the project delved into grotesque aesthetics and the visualization of dance movement, utilizing digital media analysis to decode and reconstruct body trajectories. This innovative process resulted in a collection that not only captures the essence of performance art but also challenges conventional boundaries of visual language. The dramatic interplay of color and form, coupled with the spatial choreography of the pieces, invites viewers to mentally complete the dance sequence, fostering a participatory experience that blurs the line between observer and performer.

“Rhythm” has been recognized for its unique fusion of tradition and innovation, earning the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 for its practical yet imaginative approach. The installation exemplifies how art can serve as a bridge between eras and disciplines, offering new possibilities for public space installations and the ongoing dialogue between movement and stillness.

Through “Rhythm,” Zhuoyun Xiao demonstrates that even the most ephemeral gestures can be immortalized, inviting audiences to find beauty and meaning in the interplay of motion, material, and imagination.
