Motivator: A Vibrant Green Factory Office in Kaohsiung

Dynamic design merges sustainability, innovation, and local culture

The Motivator factory office by Chiao Yi Tang and Wan Shih Yang redefines workplace environments through a blend of green architecture, vibrant aesthetics, and user-focused flexibility, setting a new benchmark for sustainable office design in Kaohsiung.

The Motivator project, realized for the Molie Quantum Energy Factory Office, stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of workplace design. Drawing inspiration from the portability of lithium batteries and the lively hues of Kaohsiung, the design integrates circular forms and sustainable materials to create a workspace that is both energizing and environmentally conscious. This approach not only reflects the bold spirit of the local community but also aligns with global trends in green living and renewable energy.

Certified with LEED Gold and Taiwan Green Building standards, the office incorporates an impressive 75 percent green building materials, emphasizing energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The use of curved and circular elements throughout the space mirrors the mobility and adaptability of lithium batteries, enhancing both comfort and spatial flow. The color palette, inspired by Kaohsiung’s sunny climate and vibrant culture, infuses the workspace with a sense of dynamism and creativity, fostering an atmosphere where innovation can thrive.

A standout feature of the design is the integration of four conical discussion pods, each measuring 3.6 meters in diameter and 3.5 meters in height. These pods, constructed with perforated surfaces and acoustic panels, offer semi-private zones that reduce noise and support focused collaboration. The structural framework, concealed by staggered perforations, was meticulously aligned using advanced 3D modeling software. Each pod was pre-assembled and labeled before on-site installation, ensuring precision and efficiency in the construction process.

Spanning four floors and covering 10,585 square meters, the office layout is strategically organized to balance interaction and concentration. Central communal areas encourage collaboration and education, while quieter corners provide spaces for independent work. Inspired by European and American office concepts, the design fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment. The use of local colors and natural views not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes relaxation and stress relief for employees.

The project’s development was not without challenges. Balancing forward-thinking design concepts with the traditional preferences of users required careful negotiation and communication. The team also faced high demands in material selection and technical execution, particularly given the scale of the space. However, through a research-driven approach—utilizing observations, interviews, and surveys—the designers were able to create a flexible environment that supports productivity, comfort, and employee satisfaction.

Motivator exemplifies how sustainable design, when paired with innovative thinking and cultural sensitivity, can transform the modern workplace. By prioritizing green materials, user well-being, and creative spatial solutions, this award-winning project demonstrates that environmentally responsible choices can lead to both practical and inspiring results in office architecture.
