Frames Of Memory stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural memory and design innovation. Drawing on the client’s fond recollections of life in Canada, Chen Yu Ching approached the project with a vision to reinterpret neoclassical elegance for a modern Taiwanese context. The result is a space that celebrates both heritage and daily ritual, offering an environment where comfort, beauty, and emotional connection coexist harmoniously.
What distinguishes this apartment is its seamless translation of North American neoclassical motifs into a compact, humid Asian setting. The design carefully balances classic proportions with minimalist molding and layered spaces, all while respecting local traditions such as feng shui. Material choices, including moisture-resistant foam boards and eco-friendly KD PP panels, address the challenges of Taiwan’s climate and ensure both durability and low environmental impact. The 1 to 4 paneling system, custom-built for this project, exemplifies the meticulous attention to proportion and longevity.
Functionality is woven into every aspect of the design. Upon entering, residents are greeted by a dark-toned foyer and a retractable door that elegantly separates the kitchen, maintaining both openness and privacy. Full-height built-in storage discreetly conceals clutter, preserving the minimalist aesthetic and enhancing the sense of spaciousness. Each interaction within the apartment is thoughtfully curated to foster comfort and a sense of belonging, echoing the client’s memories of home abroad.
The project’s development was rooted in extensive research, including interviews, site analysis, and iterative modeling. Insights from the client’s personal stories and environmental data informed every design decision, resulting in a space that is not only visually sophisticated but also deeply attuned to the rhythms of daily life. Overcoming challenges such as adapting neoclassical language to a smaller footprint and navigating local building codes, the design team demonstrated both technical expertise and creative sensitivity.
Completed in January 2024, Frames Of Memory covers 100 square meters and features a master bedroom, two secondary bedrooms, a multifunctional dining area, and layered lighting that softens the atmosphere. The project’s refined approach has earned it a Bronze A' Design Award, recognizing its contribution to quality of life and its innovative blend of art, science, and cultural storytelling.
Frames Of Memory exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge continents and eras, transforming personal history into a timeless, livable work of art that resonates with both tradition and modernity.
