The Larks Cafe: A Sanctuary of Light and Joy

Pastel palettes and mindful design shape Kyiv’s celebrated cafe space

Located within the modern Podil Plaza residential complex in Kyiv, The Larks Cafe stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of art, architecture, and mindful design. Lizaveta Odintsova’s vision draws from the lark—a bird emblematic of hope, light, and joy, as well as a symbol of the highest form of human existence in Ukrainian philosophy. This inspiration is evident in every aspect of the cafe, from its pastel color palette to its rounded furniture and signature arches, creating an inviting space for those who value freedom, sincerity, and a zest for life.

The cafe’s unique layout posed an initial challenge, with most walls formed from radial glass partitions. Odintsova approached this with creativity, ensuring that both the technology and guest zones were seamlessly integrated within the compact 50 m² footprint. The design prioritizes openness and connectivity, using caramel and pistachio hues alongside sand and gray tones to unify the space. Natural materials such as concrete, wood, and glass imbue the interior with a sense of purity and lightness, while stainless steel accents and a caramel ceiling introduce contemporary flair.

Functionality and sustainability were central to the realization of The Larks Cafe. The technical design met rigorous standards for ventilation, insulation, and durability, with eco-friendly materials like microcement, self-leveling floors, and decorative plaster chosen for their resilience and environmental benefits. The project also highlights the work of Ukrainian and Scandinavian design brands, including LITVINENKO DESIGN STUDIO, Diza, Babich studio, IKEA, Oitoproducts, FurFur, and Kononenko ID, reflecting a commitment to local craftsmanship and global aesthetics.

Minimalism defines the cafe’s atmosphere, with a deliberate absence of superfluous decor. Instead, the interplay of textures and the careful selection of furniture and finishes foster a tranquil environment. The use of float glass and rounded arches not only enhances the visual appeal but also encourages a sense of openness and community among patrons. The result is a space where visitors can relax, enjoy all-day breakfasts, and feel a genuine connection to the city and its creative spirit.

The Larks Cafe’s thoughtful design has garnered international recognition, earning a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025.
