“Proof of Rain” stands as a testament to the power of contemporary glass art to evoke emotion and memory. Drawing inspiration from the transient nature of rain, the piece explores how water droplets accumulate and shape both landscapes and human experiences. The artwork’s design features meticulously crafted glass droplets, each formed using advanced hot glass shaping and flameworking techniques. These droplets, suspended above a blue blown glass base, symbolize the accumulation of life’s moments, creating a visual narrative that resonates with viewers on both aesthetic and emotional levels.
The unique strength of “Proof of Rain” lies in its innovative approach to material and meaning. By combining the technical precision of glassblowing with the symbolic language of rainfall, Derya Geylani Vurusan achieves a delicate balance between nature and craftsmanship. The controlled splashing effects used to shape each droplet offer a dynamic sense of movement, while the blue base beneath them grounds the composition in a sense of depth and reflection. This interplay between fluidity and solidity captures the essence of rain, inviting viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the accumulation of memories.
Realized through a meticulous process, the creation of “Proof of Rain” required expert control over temperature, timing, and technique. The artist employed varying shades of blue to evoke the shifting moods of rainfall, while precision in shaping and assembling the glass elements ensured both visual harmony and structural integrity. The final installation, measuring 380 mm x 200 mm x 450 mm, invites interaction through observation, as light and reflection reveal the intricate details and layered symbolism embedded within the piece.
Research for the project focused on the intersection of natural phenomena and glass art, with a particular emphasis on replicating the fluidity of rain using static materials. Through a process of experimentation and adjustment, Derya Geylani Vurusan discovered that blending traditional glass techniques with contemporary symbolism could evoke a deeper emotional response. This approach not only pushes the boundaries of glass artistry but also encourages innovation within the broader field of art and design.
Exhibited at CI BLOOM, a leading art fair in Istanbul, “Proof of Rain” has garnered recognition for its technical excellence and conceptual depth, earning the Iron A' Design Award in 2025. The piece stands as an invitation to pause, reflect, and find meaning in the ephemeral beauty of nature, skillfully rendered in glass.
