At the intersection of art, sustainability, and innovation, Original by Nature stands as a testament to the transformative power of design. Conceived by Egemen Kemal Vurusan, the installation redefines the lifecycle of glass by upcycling used bottles into amorphous forms that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. Inspired by the purity and continuity of natural spring waters, the project embodies a harmonious blend of environmental responsibility and creative expression.
The installation’s uniqueness lies in its advanced glass blowing techniques, where thermal deformation and mold-based reshaping turn waste glass into organic, fluid sculptures. Each piece is meticulously crafted through high-temperature annealing, reaching approximately 850°C, to achieve its distinctive form. These glass modules are not merely decorative; they are engineered to house hydroponic systems, enabling sustainable urban agriculture within an artistic framework.
Technological innovation is at the core of this project. Integrated hydroponic systems, complete with sensor-controlled irrigation delivering 0.5 liters per minute per module, support optimal plant growth. Purple UV lighting enhances photosynthesis, creating a visually captivating environment while ensuring the health of the plants. The modular installation, measuring 5000 mm by 2000 mm by 3500 mm, invites visitors to engage with the dynamic interplay of water, glass, and greenery.
Original by Nature’s immersive experience is further enriched by digital art elements and interactive design. Visitors are encouraged to observe the seamless fusion of art, nature, and technology, witnessing firsthand the potential of upcycled materials in urban agriculture. The project not only raises awareness about sustainable practices but also demonstrates how discarded materials can be reimagined as vital components of contemporary design.
Presented at Akaretler Sıraevler in Istanbul, the installation is the result of extensive research into sustainable production methods, material adaptability, and user interaction. The project’s success, recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, highlights the importance of balancing artistic vision with technical innovation and environmental consciousness. Original by Nature serves as a compelling model for future initiatives at the intersection of art, technology, and sustainability.
By transforming waste into wonder, Egemen Kemal Vurusan’s installation challenges perceptions of material value and inspires a new dialogue on eco-friendly innovation in urban environments.
