Solaris: A Retro-Futuristic Wall Decor Masterpiece

Ismail Pehlivan’s multi-layered artwork fuses space art with sunset hues

Solaris, designed by Ismail Pehlivan, reimagines wall decor through a unique blend of retro-futurism, space art, and intricate craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from cosmic exploration and literary classics.

Inspired by the legendary Voyager spacecraft and the enigmatic planet from Stanisław Lem’s “Solaris,” Ismail Pehlivan’s wall decor piece captures the essence of humanity’s search for connection beyond Earth. The rhythmic arrangement of layered wooden panels symbolizes the mysterious structure of Solaris, reflecting the interplay between human curiosity and the unknown. This narrative-driven approach elevates the artwork, making it more than a decorative object—it becomes a conversation piece rooted in both science fiction and artistic innovation.

The standout feature of Solaris lies in its complex, multi-layered construction. Each layer is meticulously laser-cut from beech veneered MDF, then painted in a gradient of sunset-inspired colors, ranging from vibrant orange to deep navy blue. The inclusion of two 45 RPM vinyl records and lathe-turned iroko wood spheres adds a tactile, retro-futuristic dimension, referencing both the Voyager’s golden records and the era’s fascination with space exploration. This fusion of materials and motifs results in a visually arresting piece that commands attention in any living space.

Solaris is realized through a precise digital-to-physical process. The design begins in Adobe Illustrator, where each layer is carefully drafted over several days. After laser cutting, every component is individually painted with specialized paints to achieve the desired color transitions. Once dry, the layers are assembled using adhesive, culminating in a refined, multidimensional artwork measuring 1438 mm by 162 mm by 1371 mm and weighing 47.8 kg. The finished piece is shipped in robust, custom-made wooden boxes, ensuring its safe arrival and preservation.

Pehlivan’s creative process is deeply influenced by observation and cultural exploration. Extensive travel, along with the study of iconic films and literature, informs the emotional and conceptual depth of Solaris. The greatest challenge in the project was translating the initial vision into a precise digital drawing and selecting the perfect color palette to evoke the intended atmosphere. The result is a piece that not only decorates but also tells a story, inviting viewers to contemplate humanity’s place in the universe.

Solaris has been recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in Decorative Items and Homeware Design for 2025, a testament to its innovative approach and technical excellence. The award celebrates designs that combine practicality, industry best practices, and emotional resonance, contributing to a more inspiring and connected world.

Solaris stands as a striking example of how art, design, and technology can converge to create meaningful, visually compelling objects that enrich contemporary living spaces.
