Drawing inspiration from the metamorphosis found in the natural world, this project transforms the thorn—often seen as a symbol of adversity—into a striking lighting object. The design’s narrative explores the journey from harshness to harmony, reflecting the human experience of finding hope and beauty amid challenges. By blending raw, organic forms with sleek industrial lines, Thorn Metamorphosis achieves a delicate balance between light and shadow, strength and softness.

The uniqueness of Thorn Metamorphosis lies in its reinterpretation of one of nature’s most formidable elements. While the Industrial Revolution accelerated the transformation of organic materials into functional products, Qzens Furniture Art Design preserves the wild, untamed beauty of the thorn. This approach results in a lighting object that is both functional and deeply evocative, capturing the spirit of resilience and growth. The design’s visual language speaks to the ongoing dialogue between nature and technology, offering a fresh perspective on modern aesthetics.

The animation was realized using advanced digital tools, including Houdini for procedural modeling and Redshift for rendering, powered by dual RTX 4090 GPUs. The creative process began with CAD data, which was then shaped through procedural techniques and Vellum simulations to evoke organic transformation. Anamorphic CG cameras and cinematic lighting heightened the visual storytelling, while real product photography informed the realistic material textures. Post-production involved compositing in Nuke, editing in After Effects, and color grading in DaVinci Resolve to achieve a polished, immersive experience.

Thorn Metamorphosis was designed to engage audiences across digital platforms and live events, offering a visually compelling narrative of transformation. The animation’s technical specifications include a 16:9 aspect ratio, 3072x1728 resolution, and 24 frames per second, ensuring high-quality playback for diverse viewing environments. The project’s development spanned from September 2023 to July 2024, with creative teams collaborating between New York and Ankara. Research into seasonal changes, wind-driven movements, and realistic modeling underpinned the animation’s authenticity and emotional resonance.

Overcoming the challenge of harmonizing natural realism with cinematic storytelling, the design team crafted a composition that synchronizes visuals with specially composed music. This synergy amplifies the emotional impact, guiding viewers through a journey of metamorphosis. Thorn Metamorphosis has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its technical excellence, artistic innovation, and ability to inspire wonder. The project exemplifies how design can bridge the gap between nature and technology, offering new ways to experience resilience and transformation through art.
