The "Circus" glass sculpture series stands out as a contemporary reflection on urban life’s disorder, drawing inspiration from the dynamic movements and energy of circus performers. Through bold, mismatched colors and exaggerated forms, the collection offers a playful yet critical lens on the chaos and unpredictability that define today’s cityscapes. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted using advanced hot glass blowing and shaping techniques, emphasizing both technical mastery and expressive artistry.
Egemen Kemal Vurusan’s creative process began with detailed 2D sketches on an iPad, guiding the iterative development of asymmetrical, dynamic forms. The sculptures are crafted from high-grade soda-lime glass, with thermal annealing applied for structural stability. Precision color segmentation and hot bonding techniques ensure robust integration of the ball and leg elements, resulting in visually striking compositions that capture the spirit of urban environments.
The series is designed for passive observation, inviting viewers to engage with the sculptures as their appearance shifts with changing light and perspectives. The interplay of light and shadow reveals different textures and vibrant hues, creating an ever-evolving visual experience that mirrors the energy and unpredictability of city life. This approach highlights the importance of both craftsmanship and viewer interaction in contemporary art.
Research for the "Circus" series focused on merging satire, social critique, and glass artistry. By experimenting with material properties and color theory, the project demonstrates how form and color can evoke emotional responses and foster deeper engagement with societal themes. Audience feedback and iterative prototyping played a crucial role in refining the series, ensuring that each sculpture communicates its intended narrative.
Overcoming technical challenges, such as achieving organic shapes with precise glassblowing methods and sourcing specialized pigments, pushed the boundaries of narrative-driven glass art. The result is a collection that not only showcases Egemen Kemal Vurusan’s technical prowess but also contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the role of art in reflecting and critiquing contemporary urban life. Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, "Circus" continues to be featured in exhibitions across Istanbul, embodying the evolving spirit of modern art.
