Inspired by a visit to a timber factory in Spokane, Hao Zhong and Yuchen Qiu envisioned Spira Silva as a bold departure from conventional skyscraper design. Timber high-rises remain rare in New York, but this project challenges the norm by pushing cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction beyond traditional stacking methods. The designers sought to foster a connection to nature, offering residents the experience of living within a giant tree while contributing to sustainable urban development.
Spira Silva’s defining feature is its twisted CLT panels, which serve as the primary structural elements. This innovative approach creates a dynamic architectural language, allowing the building to stand out as an iconic landmark. The interior spaces are equally versatile, with layouts that range from open and collaborative to enclosed and private, supporting a variety of functions and fostering a sense of warmth and belonging among occupants.
The realization of Spira Silva relied on advanced digital modeling and parametric design tools. By programming the CLT panels, the design team achieved complex, fluid geometries that balance aesthetics with structural efficiency. The use of sustainable materials and a focus on reducing the carbon footprint underscore the project’s commitment to eco-conscious construction. Strategic apertures throughout the structure maximize natural light and airflow, enhancing occupant comfort and energy efficiency.
Technical specifications highlight the scale and ambition of the project, with typical CLT wall panels measuring 12'-6" x 14'-0" x 1'-0 3/8" and glulam columns at 1'-6" x 1'-0". The integration of wood-look metal panels further reinforces the building’s organic aesthetic. Research into self-shaping CLT panels with varying moisture levels informed the design, enabling the creation of expressive forms while minimizing energy use and material waste.
Located adjacent to Domino Park and the Williamsburg Bridge, Spira Silva embodies the future of urban living by merging nature and city life. The project’s recognition with the Golden A' Design Award in 2025 attests to its outstanding contribution to architecture, design, and sustainability. Spira Silva stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovative thinking in shaping cities for generations to come.
Spira Silva not only redefines the skyline but also sets a new standard for sustainable, adaptable, and human-centered high-rise design, inviting cities worldwide to imagine a greener, more vibrant future.
