Axel: The Innovative Self-Standing Coat Hanger

Redefining Stability and Portability in Modern Furniture Design

Axel, designed by Ivan Levak and Iva Grgic, offers a fresh perspective on everyday furniture, blending portability, stability, and minimalist aesthetics for contemporary living spaces.

Inspired by the transient lifestyle of students and urban dwellers, Axel addresses the need for furniture that is both mobile and enduring. The design emerged from personal experiences of frequent relocations and the desire to keep cherished pieces close, regardless of address. Axel’s flat-pack construction allows it to be easily disassembled and transported, making it ideal for those who value flexibility and convenience in their living environments.

What sets Axel apart is its unique approach to stability. Traditional coat hangers often struggle under the weight of multiple garments, becoming unbalanced and prone to tipping. Axel, however, leverages gravity as a structural ally. Its design ensures that the more items are hung, the more stable the hanger becomes. This is achieved through a central steel joint and three solid oak legs, which work together to maintain balance and durability, even when fully loaded.

The construction of Axel is a testament to thoughtful engineering and craftsmanship. Composed of 3mm steel and robust 4x2cm oak wood, the hanger is both lightweight and strong. Assembly is straightforward, requiring only a single hex key and minimal effort, thanks to its 18-screw system. Despite its simplicity, Axel can securely hold up to 15 items, making it suitable for busy households or compact spaces.

Measuring 170 cm in height and weighing just 4 kg, Axel is designed to fit seamlessly into hallways, lobbies, and interiors where space is at a premium. Its flat-pack packaging (173cm x 9cm x 4cm) further enhances its appeal for modern consumers seeking efficient storage solutions. The design’s adaptability and ease of repair underscore its sustainability and longevity.

Axel’s development journey began in Zagreb during the Covid era, with prototypes crafted from readily available materials. The designers’ research revealed that most coat hangers feature outward-pointing hooks, often compromising stability. By reorienting these hooks inward and reinforcing the central axis, Axel achieves superior static balance and increased hanging capacity. This innovative approach earned Axel the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2025, recognizing its contribution to quality of life and design excellence.

Axel stands as a prime example of how thoughtful design can transform everyday objects, offering practical solutions for dynamic lifestyles while maintaining a commitment to craftsmanship and innovation.
