Hotaru: The Floating Turntable Redefining Vinyl Experience

Audio-Technica’s Hotaru merges sound, light, and innovation for immersive listening.

Audio-Technica Corporation’s Hotaru turntable transforms vinyl listening into a multisensory spectacle, blending advanced engineering with minimalist design to create an unforgettable musical experience.

Hotaru stands out in the world of audio equipment by elevating the act of listening to vinyl records beyond mere sound. Inspired by the desire to create a captivating sensory journey, Audio-Technica Corporation designed Hotaru with a floating platter and ethereal illumination, turning each listening session into a cherished memory. This approach reimagines the traditional record player as both a technological marvel and a piece of art, seamlessly integrating into modern living spaces.

The turntable’s most distinctive feature is its floating platter, achieved through powerful magnetic repulsion. This innovation not only creates a visually striking effect but also serves a functional purpose by eliminating unwanted vibrations. As a result, the cartridge delivers pristine audio clarity, allowing listeners to experience music in its purest form. The minimalist VM cartridge and carbon tonearm further enhance both the sonic and visual elegance of the device.

Hotaru’s construction utilizes premium materials such as acrylic, aluminum, and brass, ensuring durability and a refined aesthetic. The high-quality aluminum case houses integrated speakers, while solid brass feet provide stability. The concealed belt sub-platter drive minimizes mechanical noise, contributing to the system’s exceptional sound quality. These thoughtful design choices make Hotaru not only an audio device but also a centerpiece of interior décor.

Operation is intuitive, with three simple knobs controlling lighting, turntable speed, and speaker volume. The left knob adjusts the lighting mode, type, and brightness, the center knob selects the speed, and the right knob manages the volume. This user-friendly interface allows for effortless customization of both audio and visual settings, enhancing the overall experience.

Behind Hotaru’s elegant exterior lies extensive research and engineering. Traditional turntables use rubber or springs to dampen vibrations, but Audio-Technica’s team employed magnetic repulsion to float the platter, achieving superior vibration suppression. The challenge of preventing magnetic interference with the cartridge was overcome through precise magnetic flux analysis and strategic shielding, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

Hotaru’s innovative design has earned it the prestigious Platinum A' Audio and Sound Equipment Design Award in 2025, recognizing its contribution to advancing the boundaries of art, science, and technology. As it prepares for exhibition at Milan Design Week, Hotaru stands as a testament to Audio-Technica Corporation’s commitment to redefining the vinyl listening experience for a new era.

Hotaru invites music enthusiasts and design aficionados alike to transform their spaces and senses, offering a harmonious blend of sound, light, and artistry that sets a new standard for audio innovation.
