Yokohama Symphostage: Redefining Urban Connectivity

Obayashi Corporation’s multi-layered complex revitalizes Yokohama’s cityscape

Yokohama Symphostage, designed by Obayashi Corporation, stands as a transformative complex building in Minato Mirai, Yokohama, seamlessly connecting urban life through innovative architecture and sustainable design.

Obayashi Corporation’s Yokohama Symphostage emerges as a landmark project, integrating office, hotel, and retail spaces within a sprawling 182,937.70 m² footprint. The design leverages the strengths of a consortium, allowing each business owner to curate spaces that reflect their expertise. This collaborative approach has resulted in a vibrant, multi-use public facility, where the plaza serves as a dynamic venue for events, from music performances hosted by Yokohama City and Yamaha to community gatherings, fostering a sense of place and belonging.

Strategically situated at the intersection of two major pedestrian axes, the complex reconnects previously fragmented urban pathways. The multi-layered plaza, a signature feature, revitalizes pedestrian spaces by layering public facilities and event zones, ensuring accessibility and resilience during both daily activities and emergencies. This interconnectedness not only enhances walkability but also encourages spontaneous social interactions, making the complex a lively urban hub.

Advanced environmental simulations played a crucial role in the realization of Yokohama Symphostage. Wind, sunlight, and pedestrian flow analyses informed the layout of plazas and semi-outdoor spaces, optimizing comfort and usability. The office towers feature solar-responsive façades and automated jalousie windows, balancing natural light and energy efficiency. These innovations, coupled with energy-saving systems like double-skin curtain walls and solar shading fins, have earned the project top sustainability certifications, including BELS 5-star and ZEB Ready status.

The design team, led by Hiroshi Satake, Kenji Matsuoka, Daisuke Iwasaki, and Ryosuke Okawa, harnessed cutting-edge research from Obayashi’s Technical Research Institute. Unique methodologies included comprehensive wind and acoustic simulations, evacuation planning, and the use of 3D printing for organically shaped benches. These efforts ensured that the complex not only meets high safety and comfort standards but also sets a benchmark for future urban developments.

Yokohama Symphostage’s exterior design distinguishes itself with a multi-layered façade that harmonizes with the city’s seascape. The hotel, perched atop the public and office zones, has become a new city landmark, offering panoramic views and reinforcing Yokohama’s identity as a vibrant waterfront destination. The project’s recognition with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 underscores its excellence in architectural innovation and urban integration.

Yokohama Symphostage exemplifies how thoughtful design and advanced technology can transform urban environments. By prioritizing connectivity, sustainability, and community engagement, Obayashi Corporation has set a new standard for complex buildings, inspiring future developments to create more inclusive and resilient cities.
