Sharge: Transforming Private EV Charging Through Sharing

Innovative app connects EV drivers with private charging piles

Sharge, developed by Fang Xu, Xuan Shen, and Yongwen Dai, reimagines electric vehicle charging by leveraging the sharing economy, making sustainable urban mobility more accessible and efficient.

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates worldwide, public charging infrastructure often struggles to keep pace, resulting in long wait times and high costs for drivers. Sharge addresses this challenge by transforming underutilized private charging piles into a shared community resource. Inspired by the sharing economy and the urgent need for accessible charging, the platform enables EV drivers to locate, book, and use private chargers, while allowing owners to earn passive income. This approach not only optimizes existing resources but also supports the shift toward greener, more sustainable cities.

Sharge distinguishes itself through its user-centric design and robust technological foundation. The app was developed using iterative UX research, prototyping, and user testing to ensure a seamless experience for both drivers and charger owners. High-fidelity wireframes were crafted in Figma, while React Native powers the cross-platform mobile application. Integration with Google Maps API provides precise location-based services, and Stripe API ensures secure, transparent payments. Real-time scheduling, video navigation, and a user rating system further enhance usability and trust within the network.

Research conducted during the development phase identified key pain points for both EV drivers and private charger owners, such as unclear pricing and difficulty locating available chargers. Interviews and usability tests informed the inclusion of features like video navigation and transparent scheduling, directly addressing these concerns. By focusing on the needs of both user groups, Sharge fosters a sense of community and trust, essential for the success of a decentralized sharing platform.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was balancing accessibility, affordability, and trust in a decentralized ecosystem. Ensuring that charger owners felt secure sharing their assets, while providing a reliable and convenient experience for drivers, required innovative solutions in both technology and user interface design. Overcoming social norms, regulatory inconsistencies, and technical complexities, Sharge delivers a scalable solution that encourages widespread adoption and supports urban sustainability goals.

The impact of Sharge has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Mobile Technologies, Applications and Software Design Award in 2025. This accolade underscores the platform’s potential to advance art, science, and technology by offering a trendsetting solution to modern urban challenges. As development continues, Sharge stands as a testament to the power of design-driven innovation in shaping the future of clean energy and urban mobility.

Sharge’s unique model not only addresses immediate infrastructure gaps but also paves the way for a more connected, sustainable, and efficient EV charging ecosystem. By empowering individuals to participate in the clean energy transition, the platform exemplifies how thoughtful design and technology can drive meaningful change in everyday life.
