Nagisa Bakery: Surf-Inspired Space Energizes Osaka

Bakery design blends coastal motifs, music, and color for a vibrant experience

Nagisa Bakery, designed by Katsunori Nagai, transforms a retail space in Osaka into a lively, surf-inspired bakery that channels the owner's passion for the sea, music, and community vitality.

Nagisa Bakery stands as a testament to the power of design in shaping community experiences. Located in Sakai city, Osaka, this bakery was conceived by an owner eager to infuse energy into his local area. Drawing inspiration from surfing culture and the iconic Japanese song "Nagisa Hotel" by Southern All Stars, the space was envisioned as a haven where customers could feel uplifted by both the environment and the freshly baked bread.

The interior concept artfully merges the elements of "shore" and "sea," using bold linear designs and a palette dominated by eight shades of blue. These hues, featured in ceiling louvers, evoke the rhythm and melody of the owner's favorite song, visually translating music into architecture. A standout feature is the display of baguette bread as if they were surfboards, propped against corrugated slate reminiscent of beach hut roofs. This inventive approach not only highlights the bakery’s flagship product but also reinforces the coastal theme.

Functionality and creativity intersect throughout the space. Large, central fixtures draw visitors’ attention, while distinct materials separate the product display area from the rest of the store, heightening curiosity and engagement. The use of mass-produced, cost-effective materials—such as corrugated slate roofing—demonstrates a commitment to both sustainability and budget-conscious design. Existing fixtures from the previous butcher shop were repurposed, reducing waste and construction costs.

One of the project’s main challenges was realizing the client’s vision within a limited budget. Katsunori Nagai addressed this by painting the inexpensive ceiling undercoat in eight different blue shades to mimic the effect of custom louvers. This solution delivered visual impact without exceeding financial constraints, exemplifying resourcefulness and technical skill.

Nagisa Bakery’s design has not gone unnoticed. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design, recognizing its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life. The bakery is scheduled to open in November 2024 at Sunpia Komyoike, promising to become a new local landmark where design, music, and community spirit converge.

Nagisa Bakery illustrates how thoughtful design can transform everyday spaces into sources of inspiration and connection, setting a new standard for retail environments in Japan and beyond.
