Rinn Kyoto Miyagawasuji Hitotose Aki: Tradition Illuminated

Kyoto’s private hotel blends local artistry with timeless Japanese aesthetics

Rinn Kyoto Miyagawasuji Hitotose Aki, designed by Miki Orihara, reimagines the private hotel experience by fusing Kyoto’s historic ambiance with innovative lighting and artisanal materials, earning recognition for its sensitive approach to tradition and modern comfort.

Located on the storied Miyagawa-suji in Kyoto, Rinn Kyoto Miyagawasuji Hitotose Aki stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture and local culture. The design draws inspiration from the subtle interplay of light and shadow found in Junichiro Tanizaki’s celebrated essay, "In Praise of Shadows." Upon entering, guests transition from the subdued exterior to a luminous interior, where indirect lighting accentuates the tactile qualities of walls and surfaces. This thoughtful illumination not only enhances the guest experience but also pays homage to the atmospheric streetscape of Miyagawa-cho.

Central to the hotel’s uniqueness is its collaboration with local artisans, particularly in the use of kakishibu washi paper and the koyori technique. These traditional materials, crafted by hand and imbued with natural dyes, introduce nuanced shading and warmth to the interiors. The lighting plan, developed in partnership with a washi paper artist, reflects a commitment to local production and sustainability, ensuring that each element resonates with the surrounding environment while fostering a sense of comfort and belonging.

The realization of this project required careful navigation of Kyoto’s stringent regulations designed to preserve the city’s historic landscape. The design team, led by Miki Orihara, skillfully incorporated external lighting into the first-floor interiors, avoiding visual discord and maintaining the integrity of the traditional machiya style. On the second floor, Kyoto artisans created a dynamic interplay of stillness and movement, further enriching the spatial experience.

Material innovation is a defining feature of the hotel. Japanese paper is employed in diverse forms—mixed with clay, colored and plastered, or treated with kakishibu for durability and water resistance. Techniques such as koyori and fukuro-bari introduce texture and depth, while concealed lighting within cavities adds a gentle glow. These details not only serve functional purposes but also evoke a sense of quiet luxury and cultural continuity.

The project’s development involved extensive research and dialogue with craftspeople, as well as a deep engagement with literary works that explore Japanese aesthetics and identity. Overcoming challenges posed by climate and regulatory constraints, the design team prioritized guest comfort throughout the seasons, ensuring that the hotel remains inviting year-round. The result is a space that both preserves and reinterprets Kyoto’s architectural heritage, offering guests an immersive, contemplative retreat.

Rinn Kyoto Miyagawasuji Hitotose Aki has garnered acclaim, receiving the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for its exceptional blend of technical mastery and artistic vision. This achievement underscores the project’s role in shaping the future of hospitality design, where respect for tradition and innovative thinking coexist to create spaces of enduring beauty and meaning.
