Heritage Spark emerges as a pioneering design solution in China, specifically crafted to make Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) accessible and engaging for students and design novices. The toolkit responds to a growing need for innovative methods to protect and promote ICH, as traditional knowledge faces the risk of being overshadowed by modern advancements. By providing an entry point for those unfamiliar with ICH, Heritage Spark aims to cultivate awareness, empathy, and creativity in the next generation of cultural stewards.
The toolkit distinguishes itself through its collaborative, role-playing analysis method, allowing users to explore ICH from multiple perspectives. This approach not only streamlines the creative process but also encourages participants to identify challenges and opportunities inherent in ICH preservation. The inclusion of character cards, technology cards, and thought canvases supports both individual and group ideation, making the toolkit versatile for various educational and brainstorming scenarios.
Production of Heritage Spark involved a rigorous design process, utilizing tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator, followed by digital printing on durable 300g coated paper. The cards, measuring 95mm x 133mm, are complemented by thoughtfully sized canvases for personal and team use. User research and workshop testing informed the final design, ensuring that the toolkit meets the practical needs of its target audience while maintaining high standards of quality and adaptability.
Central to Heritage Spark’s effectiveness is its ability to foster empathy. The toolkit guides users to adopt the perspectives of ICH bearers, helping them identify real-world challenges and generate innovative solutions. This empathetic approach is supported by research into card-based learning, which has proven effective in conveying complex knowledge and stimulating divergent thinking. By integrating technology cards, the toolkit also encourages users to envision how modern innovations can be harmoniously blended with traditional practices.
Heritage Spark’s impact has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design for 2025. This accolade highlights the toolkit’s practical and innovative qualities, as well as its potential to contribute positively to cultural preservation efforts. By bridging the gap between heritage and modernity, Heritage Spark empowers designers, educators, and cultural practitioners to engage with tradition in transformative ways, ensuring that ICH remains vibrant and relevant for future generations.
Heritage Spark stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in addressing cultural challenges. Its accessible, collaborative, and research-driven approach offers a model for how technology and creativity can work together to safeguard the world’s intangible treasures.
