Located near heritage conservation districts and the lush Yanzhong Greenland, Gaofuli’s super high-rise structure is strategically positioned to maintain a visual connection with a prominent city center landmark. This placement not only honors the city’s historical context but also maximizes natural views and sunlight, enhancing the quality of urban living. The project’s 46,080-square-meter footprint reflects a thoughtful response to both the site’s constraints and its opportunities, prioritizing safety, accessibility, and a cohesive street presence.
The design draws inspiration from classic Shanghai architecture, particularly the iconic Shikumen style. Characterized by red and gray bricks, yellow sand, and cement, traditional Shikumen elements are reinterpreted through the use of copper-toned metals and ceramic-like panels. This modern material palette creates a warm, textured facade that bridges the past and present, offering a timeless aesthetic that resonates with both residents and visitors.
Architectural features such as vertical compositions, strong polygonal outlines, and softened, chamfered corners pay tribute to the vernacular forms of the surrounding historic area. The entrance spaces and arched motifs evoke the welcoming spirit of traditional Shanghai neighborhoods, while the elevated ground floor ensures safe access and a harmonious connection to the street. The building’s layout, with south and east facades oriented toward sunlight and park vistas, further enhances its livability and environmental performance.
Research and innovation underpin every aspect of Gaofuli’s design. The development team leveraged the site’s unique geometry to optimize natural light and views, while complying with safety and evacuation standards. The integration of sustainable urbanism principles—such as maximizing solar exposure and creating green public spaces—demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that balances heritage with modern needs.
Gaofuli’s remarkable synthesis of cultural identity and contemporary design has earned it the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design for 2025. This recognition highlights the project’s outstanding technical expertise, artistic skill, and its role in shaping a vibrant, sustainable future for Shanghai’s urban landscape.
Gaofuli exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can honor the past while embracing the future, setting a new benchmark for urban renewal projects in cities worldwide.
