Guijiu 20: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity in Baijiu Packaging

Innovative bottle design celebrates Guizhou’s culture and craftsmanship

Guijiu 20 by Liandong Zhang and Xueqian Zhang redefines Chinese baijiu packaging, drawing inspiration from Guizhou’s rich landscape and ethnic heritage to create a product that stands out in both form and meaning.

Guijiu 20 emerges as a distinguished entry in the world of Chinese spirits, blending the essence of Guizhou’s natural scenery and local culture into every facet of its packaging. The design, led by Liandong Zhang and Xueqian Zhang, takes cues from the region’s iconic terraces and traditional ethnic patterns, resulting in a bottle that is as much a cultural artifact as it is a vessel for fine baijiu. This approach not only elevates the product’s visual identity but also strengthens its connection to place, offering consumers a tangible link to the land and its people.

The bottle’s unique structure—heaven round and earth square—symbolizes harmony and perfection, concepts deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy. This form, paired with motifs of annual rings and terrace lines, visually communicates the ideas of vintage and regional authenticity. The use of traditional patterns from Guizhou’s ethnic minorities, such as butterflies, phoenixes, and birds, further enriches the design, blending modern aesthetics with heartfelt cultural expression. These elements are rendered in three-dimensional relief, enhancing both the tactile and visual experience.

Material innovation plays a crucial role in Guijiu 20’s realization. The bottle is crafted from high-transparency glass with a metallic cap, achieving a luxurious appearance while maintaining practicality. Advanced surface treatment techniques give the glass a ceramic-like texture, a breakthrough that not only elevates the product’s perceived value but also reduces production costs. The label, adorned with multi-colored blocks, encapsulates the vibrant landscape of Guizhou and the unique positioning of the soft jiang-flavour spirit within the market.

Guijiu 20’s design addresses key challenges in the competitive baijiu sector. Traditionally, cylinder-shaped bottles and brown tones dominate the market, making the adoption of a square bottle and blue hues a bold move. This departure from convention helps the product stand out on shelves and offers consumers a distinctive tactile experience, with the square shape providing a unique grip. The thoughtful integration of local motifs and innovative materials positions Guijiu 20 as a symbol of both heritage and modernity.

This packaging design is not only visually striking but also functionally effective, making it easier for consumers to identify and select the product. The project, which began in February 2021 and launched in June 2024, reflects a deep commitment to merging artistry with usability. The result is a baijiu that resonates with both tradition and contemporary sensibilities, earning Guijiu 20 the prestigious Golden A’ Design Award in 2025.
