Seven Hills Whisky: A Modern Ode to Smoky Heritage

Innovative packaging captures Hungary’s first smoky single malt whisky

Seven Hills Whisky, designed by Dorottya Gajdos and Graphasel Design Studio, redefines beverage packaging with a sophisticated blend of tradition and contemporary aesthetics, earning international acclaim for its unique approach.

Seven Hills Whisky stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of Hungarian spirits, marking the debut of the nation’s first smoky single malt whisky. The packaging, conceived by Dorottya Gajdos and realized by Graphasel Design Studio, draws inspiration from the whisky’s signature smoky essence. An abstract smoke pattern encircles the bottle, visually echoing the depth and complexity found within. Black and copper tones evoke the richness of pot still distillation, while a handcrafted beechwood screw cap—crafted from the same wood as the ageing barrels—emphasizes the harmony between maturation and natural materials.

Distinctive among its peers, Seven Hills Whisky is characterized by a nutty profile and Tokaji aszú-like notes, achieved through barley malt smoked over organic Tokaji aszú grape pomace. The label’s modern, sleek design is anchored by the iconic ‘7’ shape of the Sevenhills logo, counterbalanced by the dynamic representation of smoke that playfully wraps around the bottle. This interplay of form and function not only enhances shelf presence but also reinforces the whisky’s unique identity.

Technologically, the packaging employs offset printing for the label and screen printing for the bottle, ensuring durability and clarity. Measuring 260 mm in height and 65 mm in width, the bottle’s proportions are tailored for both visual impact and ergonomic handling. As customers peer through the whisky-filled bottle, the liquid amplifies the illusion of swirling smoke, deepening the sensory experience and reinforcing the spirit’s smoky character.

The design process built upon the visual identity established by the Tokaj Gin packaging, also from Sevenhills Distillery, but with a more refined and modern approach. The creative team, led by János Pintér and art director László Ördögh, faced the challenge of representing smoke in a way that was both subtle and contemporary. Multiple design iterations ensured the final result would envelop the bottle without overshadowing the label, achieving a balance that highlights the whisky’s artisanal roots and innovative spirit.

Recognition for this achievement came in the form of a Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, celebrating the project’s technical excellence and artistic innovation. Seven Hills Whisky’s packaging not only elevates the product but also sets a new benchmark for contemporary beverage design, blending heritage, craftsmanship, and visual storytelling into a singular, memorable experience.

Seven Hills Whisky’s design invites connoisseurs and collectors alike to appreciate the fusion of tradition and modernity, offering a glimpse into the future of Hungarian spirits through the lens of exceptional packaging.
