Moon Trace: Illuminating Sino-French Cultural Harmony

Art installation fuses lunar phases and dragon motifs in Shanghai

Moon Trace by Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts reimagines the intersection of Eastern and Western symbolism, celebrating 60 years of China-France diplomatic relations through a mesmerizing art installation.

Launched at the inaugural Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival in October 2024, Moon Trace stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between China and France. Drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritages of both nations, the installation explores the metaphorical significance of lunar phases and the dragon, a symbol revered for strength and wisdom. The design harmoniously blends the Eastern full moon’s association with unity and the Western crescent moon’s embodiment of hope, while the dragon motif weaves together the shared aspirations of both cultures.

Moon Trace distinguishes itself through its innovative fusion of art and technology. The installation’s structure, crafted primarily from recycled steel, is divided into four modular sections for efficient assembly and transport. Advanced lighting systems, including built-in LED strips and external projections, interact with polished metal surfaces and intermittent smoke effects to create a surreal, immersive tunnel. This interplay of light and shadow invites viewers to experience a visual journey that transcends cultural boundaries.

The project’s interactive features further enhance its appeal. An automatic sensing spray system and adaptable lighting effects respond to audience movement and viewing angles, generating dynamic landscapes that shift with each visitor’s perspective. Projection technology enriches the visual narrative, enabling the installation to adapt seamlessly to diverse exhibition themes and environments.

Underlying Moon Trace is extensive research into the symbolism of lunar phases and dragons in both Eastern and Western traditions. The installation not only commemorates the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic ties but also encourages reflection on cultural exchange and unity. By integrating eco-friendly materials and modern technology, the design team demonstrates a commitment to sustainability without compromising artistic impact.

Despite facing challenges such as complex fabrication, budget constraints, and unpredictable weather, the design team prioritized environmental responsibility and artistic excellence. Their collaborative efforts resulted in a visually stunning installation that has garnered international acclaim, including the Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2025.

Moon Trace invites audiences to appreciate the beauty of cultural fusion and the harmony achievable through thoughtful design. As preparations begin for its re-exhibition in France, the installation continues to inspire awe, serving as a luminous bridge between East and West.
