The Kweichow Moutai Group’s new packaging for its baijiu series marks a thoughtful entry into the Japanese market, reflecting a deep understanding of both Chinese and Japanese cultures. Drawing inspiration from the Tang Dynasty—a period renowned for its vibrant cultural exchange between the two nations—the design incorporates motifs and elements that resonate with audiences in both countries. This approach not only honors tradition but also positions the product as a sophisticated ambassador of cultural dialogue.
A standout feature of the packaging is its calligraphy, derived from a poem by Prince Nagaya, a Japanese poet from the Tang Dynasty era. The phrase, “Lands apart, yet sharing the same sky,” is more than decorative; it references a historical moment when Japan sent kasaya to Buddhist monks in China, symbolizing goodwill and unity. This poetic inscription also appeared on relief supplies sent from Japan to Wuhan during the recent epidemic, underscoring the enduring spirit of friendship and mutual support between the two nations.
The bottle itself draws from the iconic silhouette of classic Moutai vessels, while its finish pays homage to the refined Ru Kiln porcelain—a celebrated art form originating in the Tang dynasty and later flourishing during the Song dynasty. The result is a tactile and visual experience that merges elegance with historical significance, further distinguishing the product within the competitive spirits market.
Measuring 77x77x173mm, the packaging is meticulously crafted to appeal to both collectors and consumers. The design process involved extensive research into the shared history of China and Japan, particularly the influence of Tang dynasty culture on Japanese society. This research informed every aspect of the design, from the choice of materials to the integration of symbolic motifs, ensuring authenticity and resonance with the intended audience.
Yi Huang and Pei Luo navigated significant challenges in creating a product that is manufactured in China but sold exclusively in Japan. Balancing cultural sensitivities, legal requirements, and consumer preferences required a nuanced approach, resulting in a design that is both compliant and compelling. The project’s success is reflected in its recognition with the prestigious Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, a testament to its innovation and impact on the global stage.
Kweichow Moutai’s baijiu packaging stands as a model of cross-cultural design, blending art, history, and craftsmanship to foster understanding and appreciation between nations. This achievement highlights the power of thoughtful design in advancing cultural exchange and elevating lifestyle experiences worldwide.
