The Yamaguchi office, completed in early 2024, stands as a testament to Kyoei Steel’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Drawing inspiration from the process of recycling steel, the building’s exterior mimics stacked billets, visually narrating the journey of scrap metal into new, purposeful forms. This symbolic approach not only reinforces the company’s identity but also sets a new standard for sustainable corporate architecture.
Inside, the design takes a unique turn by integrating Kyoei Steel’s own materials—angle steel, rebars, and flat bars—into the visible finishes. Traditionally concealed structural elements are brought to the forefront, celebrating their strength and aesthetic potential. The interplay of steel and light is further enhanced with barcode and QR code motifs, which extend throughout the office and are transformed into three-dimensional lighting features. These elements create dynamic visual effects, adding depth and movement to the workspace while intuitively communicating the company’s technological prowess.
Technological innovation is central to the realization of this project. The building’s stacked exterior is achieved through special coatings that create textural variations, symbolizing the ongoing cycle of recycling. Seamless LED fixtures shaped like billets are integrated into the ceiling, harmonizing with steel louvers to produce a cohesive and energy-efficient lighting environment. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the office is not only visually striking but also highly functional and sustainable.
Research played a pivotal role in the development of the project. Architectural design research focused on exploring the potential of recycled steel in building applications, with extensive material analysis, spatial testing, and lighting simulations. The result is an office that serves as both a functional workspace and a living showroom, demonstrating the versatility and beauty of recycled steel. The project has set a benchmark for sustainable design, enhancing Kyoei Steel’s corporate branding and raising public awareness about responsible manufacturing.
Overcoming significant creative and technical challenges, the design team succeeded in unifying operational efficiency with architectural symbolism. Multiple prototypes and refinements were required to perfect the QR code-inspired vertical design and lighting integration, ensuring that the building not only meets the practical needs of its occupants but also stands as a beacon of innovation and environmental stewardship.
“Embraced in Recycled Steel” was honored with the Golden A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its outstanding contribution to architecture, design, and sustainability. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can foster creativity, collaboration, and efficiency, while minimizing environmental impact and advancing the dialogue on sustainable urban development.
