The Stacked Crystal Form stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of design, technology, and corporate identity. Drawing inspiration from the physical properties of quartz crystal chips, the architecture features layered rectangular volumes of varying thicknesses, echoing the way a crystal’s thickness and angle determine its frequency. This motif is not only present in the building’s striking exterior but also extends throughout the interior, providing a cohesive visual language that symbolizes Daishinku’s legacy of technological advancement and its vision for future growth.
Lighting design plays a pivotal role in this project, with illumination angles directly referencing the precise cuts of crystal chips—35.15 degrees for AT-cut, 38 degrees for CT-cut, and 52 degrees for DT-cut. This innovative approach results in dynamic line lighting that both highlights the architectural form and supports the well-being of occupants. Circadian rhythm-based color temperature variations are incorporated to enhance intellectual productivity, reflecting a deep understanding of how environment influences performance in contemporary workspaces.
The building’s spatial organization further supports its function as a smart factory. Each of the five above-ground floors is arranged around a central atrium, allowing natural light to permeate the workspace from a skylight above. This design not only improves energy efficiency but also fosters openness and encourages interaction among employees, promoting a collaborative atmosphere essential for innovation-driven enterprises.
Located in Kakogawa, Hyogo, adjacent to Daishinku’s Central Laboratory, the project was completed in 2024 and represents a significant step forward in integrating advanced production systems with sustainable architectural practices. The steel-framed structure, with a total floor area exceeding 10,000 square meters, incorporates energy-efficient technologies to minimize environmental impact while maximizing operational effectiveness.
Recognition for the Stacked Crystal Form’s excellence came in the form of the Golden A' Design Award in 2025, underscoring its status as a trendsetting creation that advances the fields of architecture, design, and technology. The project’s innovative use of crystal-inspired forms and lighting not only visualizes Daishinku’s brand but also sets a new standard for smart factory design, where form and function are inextricably linked.
Stacked Crystal Form exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform industrial architecture, creating spaces that are both visually compelling and highly functional. Nobuaki Miyashita’s approach demonstrates the power of architectural storytelling, where every element—from structure to lighting—works in concert to express a company’s identity and aspirations.
