Drawing inspiration from the iconic murals of Dunhuang and the Chinese 24 solar terms, Dapeng Zhang’s project reimagines traditional visual language for contemporary audiences. The design meticulously reconstructs Dunhuang’s mineral color palette and integrates historical patterns with modern typography, resulting in a vibrant synthesis that honors both past and present. This approach not only preserves the authenticity of Dunhuang’s visual heritage but also infuses it with a minimalist, modern sensibility.
At the core of “Time and Seasons of Dunhuang” lies a unique blend of Mogao Caves aesthetics and agricultural symbolism. By visualizing the philosophy of each solar term through contemporary design, the project offers a new model for the revitalization of intangible cultural heritage. The posters, produced via screen printing at a large format of 594mm×841mm, serve as both artistic statements and educational tools, inviting viewers to engage deeply with China’s seasonal traditions.
The design’s interaction strategy is multifaceted, leveraging visual magnetism, narrative storytelling, emotional resonance, and social media propagation. This ensures that the posters not only captivate audiences but also foster participatory engagement and grassroots dissemination. As a result, the project has sparked widespread discussion on social platforms, enhancing public awareness and appreciation of Dunhuang’s cultural legacy.
Comprehensive research underpins the project, combining classical literature review, on-site investigations at the Mogao Grottoes, and public feedback through surveys and interviews. The findings reveal that the integration of Dunhuang and solar-term elements resonates strongly with diverse audiences, inspiring renewed interest in traditional culture and setting a benchmark for future cultural promotion initiatives. Commercially, related creative products have enjoyed significant success, further demonstrating the design’s impact on both cultural identity and industry innovation.
Overcoming challenges such as harmonizing intricate Dunhuang motifs with legible typography and curating authentic elements from scattered sources, the project exemplifies the power of design to bridge tradition and modernity. “Time and Seasons of Dunhuang” stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of cultural heritage in contemporary life, offering inspiration for designers and cultural advocates alike.
Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, this project highlights the value of integrating historical depth with modern creativity, contributing to a richer, more connected global cultural landscape.
