Inspired by the spiraling patterns found in nature and the boundless energy of life, Spiral Bloom embodies the concepts of unity, evolution, and innovation. Kuo Kuo-Hsiang’s vision draws from organic forms in motion—such as biological growth and celestial dynamics—resulting in an installation that symbolizes continuous transformation and collective strength. The artwork’s presence in a high-ceilinged, glass-walled atrium enhances its message, inviting viewers to reflect on the infinite possibilities of the future.
The installation comprises three monumental sculptures, each suspended within a 36-meter-wide and 7.8-meter-high space. Measuring 640 cm, 750 cm, and 1070 cm respectively, the sculptures are constructed from 51 stainless steel components arranged in concentric spirals. This meticulous arrangement creates a floating visual effect, reinforcing the sense of weightlessness and movement. The seamless integration with the minimalist architecture allows the sculptures to interact with shifting natural light, casting dynamic reflections and shadows that evolve throughout the day.
Realizing Spiral Bloom required a blend of advanced engineering and artistic craftsmanship. Each structure, weighing between 300 and 900 kg, was fabricated from high-grade stainless steel using laser cutting, welding, and polishing techniques to achieve a fluid, seamless aesthetic. The suspension system, a critical aspect of the project, involved precision-calibrated steel cables and extensive structural calculations to ensure both safety and visual elegance. Full-scale simulations and rigorous testing in the workshop refined the final installation, balancing structural stability with the desired illusion of levitation.
Spiral Bloom is designed for interaction from multiple vantage points. From the ground, the sculptures appear as organic forms suspended in midair, while views from upper levels reveal their three-dimensional depth. The reflective surfaces respond to changing sunlight, transforming the atrium into a living canvas of light and shadow. This ever-changing visual composition encourages ongoing engagement and contemplation, making each visit a unique experience.
The project’s research delved into the relationship between large-scale suspended art and architectural space, focusing on structural engineering, material properties, and viewer perception. By challenging conventional notions of mass and gravity, Spiral Bloom demonstrates how public art can enhance both the aesthetic and experiential qualities of contemporary environments. Its success is underscored by its recognition with the prestigious Golden A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2025, celebrating its innovative contribution to art, design, and technology.
Spiral Bloom stands as a testament to the power of public art to inspire, transform, and unite. Through its harmonious blend of form, light, and space, the installation invites viewers to engage with themes of vitality, transformation, and hope, leaving a lasting impression on all who encounter it.
