Gushu Jinzhu: Reviving Heritage Through Dried Fruit Packaging

Chushan Design fuses tradition and innovation in award-winning longan gift box

Gushu Jinzhu by Chushan Design reimagines dried fruit packaging as a celebration of Chinese heritage, blending ancient symbolism, artisanal craftsmanship, and sustainable design for a contemporary audience.

Drawing inspiration from the Loong, a revered symbol of vitality in Chinese civilization, Chushan Design’s Gushu Jinzhu packaging transforms the centuries-old narrative of longan trees into a visual and tactile experience. The roots and textures of wild longan trees echo the sinewy form and sacred scales of the Loong, while Taoist philosophy—"tree metamorphosing into Loong, Loong birthing pearls"—is translated into every detail of the design. This approach not only honors tradition but also introduces a fresh perspective to modern packaging.

The uniqueness of Gushu Jinzhu lies in its spiritual storytelling and sophisticated craftsmanship. The front panel, adorned with the motif "Twin Loong Playing with Pearl," positions the product itself as a symbol of auspiciousness. The interplay of ancient seal script and matte metal plaques bridges the gap between heritage and a futuristic aesthetic, creating a packaging identity that is both rooted in history and forward-looking. The use of botanical motifs and engraved textures further enhances the narrative, inviting users to engage with the cultural symbolism embedded in each element.

Technologically, the packaging employs a Heaven-Earth Lid structure, centering on a gold-foiled depiction of the centuries-old longan tree. The engraved Twin Loong and longan vine motifs, combined with a Republic-era poster inside, highlight both the product’s heritage and its practical features, such as moisture-proofing. The inclusion of a Song Dynasty Celadon Glaze tea bowl and four acrylic jars, each with botanical stickers, creates a cohesive and elevated unboxing experience that merges function with artistry.

Measuring 360mm by 240mm by 90mm, the gift box contains four jars of dried longan and a 130mm-diameter tea bowl. The vibrant orange-red hue of the box evokes festive joy, while its modular compartments ensure both protection and storytelling. The design not only preserves the integrity of the dried fruit but also elevates the act of gifting into a poetic ritual, reminiscent of the refined aesthetics cherished by Song Dynasty literati.

Gushu Jinzhu stands as a testament to the power of design in cultural revitalization. By integrating elements from Song ceramics, traditional motifs, and eco-friendly materials, the project supports both heritage preservation and sustainable economic development. The design’s success is underscored by its recognition with the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, affirming its impact on art, design, and technology.

Through Gushu Jinzhu, Chushan Design demonstrates how packaging can transcend mere function, becoming a medium for storytelling, cultural connection, and sustainable innovation—inviting new generations to rediscover and celebrate the richness of Chinese tradition.
