The Joy of Swimming Fish stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of Eastern philosophy and modern design. Drawing inspiration from the classic exchange between Zhuangzi and Huizi, the exhibition space explores the nature of perception, joy, and unity between observer and observed. This philosophical underpinning is translated into a spatial experience that encourages visitors to contemplate their relationship with nature and society.
Qian Zhen’s approach is distinguished by the use of flowing curves and dynamic spatial structures, simulating the sensation of fish swimming freely. The design’s poetic atmosphere is further enhanced by the interplay of light and transparency, achieved through a rectangular glass structure. This architectural choice not only highlights the fluid interior but also amplifies the sense of openness and breathability, inviting visitors to move and reflect within the space.
Measuring 21.5 meters in length, 8.2 meters in height, and 13.3 meters in width, the two-story building offers a generous site area of 285.95 square meters. The interior’s curved forms contrast with the rectilinear exterior, symbolizing the philosophical dialogue between logic and romance, structure and spontaneity. The design’s technical execution required careful consideration to balance aesthetic ambition with practical functionality, ensuring the space remains accessible and engaging.
Interaction is central to the concept. The verb “swim” is reimagined not only as the movement of fish but also as a metaphor for human connection and communication. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the space on multiple levels, reflecting on the unity of humanity and nature, as well as the dialectical relationship between the individual and society. This duality imbues the environment with both aesthetic beauty and educational depth.
The Joy of Swimming Fish was realized in Shanghai between October 2021 and June 2023, overcoming the challenge of translating abstract philosophical ideas into tangible spatial forms. The project’s success has been recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025, honoring its innovative integration of cultural narrative, technical excellence, and emotional resonance.
Qian Zhen’s creation invites visitors to experience a moment of unity—both as observers and participants—within a space that celebrates the enduring dialogue between tradition and innovation.
