Zig Zag Jewelry: Where Geometry Meets Wearable Art

Mayte Ossorio Domecq’s innovative line transforms leather into fluid forms

Inspired by the adaptability of paper, the Zig Zag jewelry line by Mayte Ossorio Domecq redefines contemporary accessories through inventive craftsmanship and sustainable design.

The Zig Zag collection draws its creative spark from the simple act of covering a notebook. Just as rigid paper gains flexibility through precise cuts and folds, this jewelry line transforms firm leather rectangles into elegant, wearable pieces. The design process centers on strategic, rhythmic cuts that allow the material to adapt gracefully to the body, creating a sense of movement and fluidity from what was once static and geometric.

Each piece in the Zig Zag line begins with double-layered, overlapping leather rectangles. Through a series of equidistant, transverse cuts, these forms morph from straight to curved, resulting in necklaces, bracelets, and earrings that embrace both visual and functional rhythm. This technique not only optimizes the use of leather remnants but also maximizes material exploration, ensuring each accessory is both unique and resource-efficient.

The handcrafted production process employs bonded cowhide leather in a variety of colors and textures, including pastel, metallic, and classic finishes. Cutting dies and hole punch tools are used to achieve the collection’s signature curves and adaptability. The result is jewelry that is lightweight, comfortable, and silent in movement, with secure metal fastenings for ease of wear. Adjustable features ensure a perfect fit, making these pieces ideal for daily use.

Zig Zag’s design journey began in Buenos Aires in 2019 and culminated in 2022, following extensive experimentation and applied research. The project’s core challenge was to create bold, structurally sound accessories from small leather remnants, minimizing waste while maximizing aesthetic impact. The innovative approach to cutting and shaping leather has been met with international acclaim, with the collection now available in Germany, Turkey, and Argentina.

Recognized for its ingenuity and sustainable ethos, the Zig Zag line was awarded the Sello del Buen Diseño Argentino 2024 and a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025. These accolades highlight the collection’s contribution to contemporary jewelry, blending art, science, and technology to enhance both style and quality of life.

The Zig Zag collection stands as a testament to the power of creative transformation—where geometry, sustainability, and craftsmanship converge to create jewelry that moves with the wearer and the times.
