Salamat Apartment: Redefining Urban Living with Light and Brick

Innovative design overcomes urban constraints for harmonious living spaces

Salamat Apartment, designed by Faezeh Tavasoliara, stands as a compelling response to the challenges of irregular urban plots and restrictive regulations in Hamedan, Iran. Completed in 2025, this residential project reimagines apartment living by optimizing natural light, privacy, and urban integration, while drawing from both traditional and modern architectural approaches.

Salamat Apartment addresses the complexities of a site with irregular geometry and limited light access, a common challenge in dense urban environments. Rather than relying on conventional solutions like light wells, the design introduces strategic window placements, terraces, and a fragmented façade to ensure every unit benefits from daylight. A double-height atrium in the duplex units and a break in the side wall further channel sunlight deep into the interiors, enhancing the sense of openness and tranquility for residents.

The project’s façade is a standout feature, utilizing a modular brick lattice shell that unifies the building’s exterior and references local architectural traditions. This perforated brick screen not only filters light and provides privacy but also creates a dynamic interplay of shadow and texture, contributing to the building’s unique urban identity. The use of custom-designed bolted brick modules adds depth and rhythm, challenging the monotony often imposed by municipal regulations.

Functionality is carefully balanced with aesthetics throughout the design. Bedrooms are positioned at the front for privacy, while living spaces are oriented toward the rear to maximize daylight and views. Parking is efficiently distributed across two levels, accommodating both standard and duplex units. The façade serves as a subtle critique of restrictive zoning codes, offering a refined alternative that enhances both livability and the surrounding streetscape.

Material innovation is central to Salamat Apartment’s success. Brick, a traditional material, is reinterpreted with modern construction techniques to achieve both structural integrity and visual appeal. Collaborations with local suppliers and brands ensured high-quality materials for concrete, insulation, windows, and mechanical systems, further elevating the building’s performance and comfort.

The project’s research-driven approach included site analysis, light simulation, and parametric modeling, enabling the team to optimize spatial organization and façade design. Insights gained from this process informed key strategies, such as maximizing natural light without compromising privacy and using the façade as a platform for urban critique. The result is a harmonious living environment that addresses both the practical and emotional needs of its residents.

Salamat Apartment’s innovative solutions to urban constraints have earned it the Bronze A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2025. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform limitations into opportunities, setting a new standard for residential architecture in challenging urban contexts. By integrating traditional materials with contemporary methods and prioritizing the well-being of its inhabitants, Salamat Apartment offers a vision for more integrated, sustainable, and inspiring city living.
