Minimalist Argentine luminaire merges tactile innovation with timeless design

Orbita stands out as a luminaire that draws direct inspiration from the cycles of the sun and orbital movements, aiming to enhance quality of life by allowing users to tailor their lighting environment throughout the day. This design leverages a patented ultra-matte material, celebrated for its tactile softness and durability, to create a product that is as functional as it is visually striking. The designers sought to highlight the material’s unique properties, making it central to both the aesthetic and the user experience.

What sets Orbita apart is its innovative infinite rotation system, which enables users to manually adjust the direction and quality of light with a simple, intuitive gesture. The fixture’s central ring and shade are crafted for seamless interaction, inviting users to engage directly with the object. This tactile approach to lighting not only encourages personalization but also transforms the act of illumination into a dynamic, evolving process, echoing the natural progression of daylight.

The realization of Orbita involved advanced CNC machining and steam bending techniques, utilizing Italian-made equipment and production leftovers from kitchen countertops. More than 25 custom components were designed and manufactured specifically for this lamp, ensuring a harmonious integration of parts. The anti-glare screen, made from 95% patented Italian material, features self-regenerating, fingerprint-resistant surfaces, and is treated with electron beam curing for enhanced longevity and color stability. These technical achievements underscore the designers’ commitment to sustainability and precision.

Research for Orbita delved into astronomy, material science, and circadian lighting technologies, resulting in a product that bridges the gap between technological innovation and minimalist design. The Argentine design landscape posed significant challenges, particularly in sourcing and adapting the advanced FENIX material for lighting applications. Despite these hurdles, the project’s international outlook and meticulous craftsmanship have positioned Orbita as a standout piece on the global stage, earning it the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2025.
