Time Imprint stands as a pioneering example of elderly-friendly residential design, drawing inspiration from the pastoral verses of Tang Dynasty poet Wang Bo. The project, located in Suzhou and completed in late 2024, offers a thoughtful response to the unique needs of China’s aging population. By integrating accessible courtyards, sunrooms for gardening, and interconnected caregiver-bedroom layouts, the design fosters both independence and community, distinguishing itself from the often impersonal atmosphere of conventional senior facilities.
Haocheng Qiao’s vision transcends mere functionality, weaving traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary green technologies. The 680-square-meter, three-story structure utilizes eco-friendly materials such as carbonized bamboo, oak, and granite, while incorporating clean energy systems and smart home features. Double-glazed windows achieve a thermal efficiency of 1.9 W/m²K, and vertical modular planters with automated irrigation support sustainable living. These innovations align with China’s “New Countryside” initiative, emphasizing cultural resonance and environmental responsibility over ostentatious rural mansions.
Accessibility is at the core of the design. Anti-slip rubber flooring, diatomaceous earth walls, and antimicrobial bathroom tiles ensure safety and hygiene. Optimized pathways, reduced from 8 to 3.5 meters, and the strategic placement of elevators and handrails enhance mobility for elderly residents. Smart controls synchronize lighting and security, while ergonomic woven furniture and intuitive interfaces modernize traditional craftsmanship for comfort and ease of use.
Time Imprint’s spatial organization is informed by extensive research into therapeutic elderly housing. The project addresses the challenge of creating aesthetically rich, functional spaces within limited footprints. Vertical green walls and rooftop gardens blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments, promoting ecological connectivity and well-being. Human-centric layouts prioritize senior safety, while fostering intergenerational connections and a sense of belonging.
The project’s innovative approach has garnered significant recognition, earning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025. This accolade celebrates Time Imprint’s outstanding expertise, technical excellence, and artistic merit, positioning it as a benchmark for future rural housing developments in China and beyond.
Time Imprint by Haocheng Qiao exemplifies how culturally sensitive, sustainable design can redefine green living for aging populations. By harmonizing tradition, technology, and accessibility, the project offers a compelling blueprint for the future of rural residential architecture.
