The office interior, completed in early 2024, stands as a testament to the creative potential of recycled materials in contemporary architecture. By exposing angle steel, rebars, and flat bars—elements typically hidden within a building’s structure—the design celebrates the material’s inherent strength and texture. Barcode and QR code patterns, inspired by Kyoei Steel’s digital identity, are integrated throughout the space, visually linking the physical environment to the company’s online presence.
Lighting plays a pivotal role in this project, with billet-shaped seamless LED fixtures embedded in steel louvers across the ceiling. These innovative lighting solutions not only illuminate the workspace but also accentuate the barcode-inspired motifs, creating a dynamic interplay between material, technology, and light. The result is a cohesive design language that reinforces both the industrial narrative and the forward-thinking ethos of Kyoei Steel.
The design process involved extensive applied research, including material experimentation, spatial simulations, and lighting analysis. Collaboration among architects, engineers, and company stakeholders led to insights that advanced sustainable interior design. Prototype testing and digital modeling revealed the aesthetic potential of exposed steel, influencing broader practices in industrial architecture and material reuse.
One of the project’s main challenges was redefining the role of recycled steel beyond its conventional industrial function. Achieving a refined aesthetic while maintaining material authenticity required innovative detailing and finishing techniques. Additionally, regulatory constraints and production limitations necessitated iterative prototyping to ensure harmony between raw steel textures and the digital motifs that permeate the space.
The completed office not only enhances operational efficiency and employee engagement but also serves as a model for sustainable design in the corporate sector. By merging recycled materials with digital branding elements, the project demonstrates how industrial heritage can be reimagined for modern workspaces, earning it the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for its remarkable innovation and artistic excellence.
Embraced in Recycled Steel exemplifies the fusion of sustainability, technology, and design, setting a new standard for office interiors that aspire to both environmental responsibility and visual impact.
