Clay Moulded: Transforming Theatre with Sculpted Clay Interiors

Klaipėda’s Musical Theatre Redefines Space with Dynamic Clay Design

Inspired by the sandy shores and historic clay brick architecture of Klaipėda, Marius Mateika’s “Clay Moulded” project sets a new benchmark in theatrical interior design, blending tradition, innovation, and artistry in a unique performance space.

The “Clay Moulded” musical theatre in Klaipėda, Lithuania, stands as a testament to the power of material-driven design. Drawing inspiration from the city’s coastal landscape and its iconic red clay brick buildings, architect Marius Mateika envisioned a space where the drama of the sea and the earth converge. The choice of clay as the primary material not only pays homage to the region’s heritage but also establishes a dramatic, tactile atmosphere befitting a performance venue.

What distinguishes this theatre is its unprecedented use of natural clay for interior décor. With over 30 tonnes of clay sculpted across walls and ceilings, the project is believed to be the largest of its kind globally. The continuous, flowing patterns—crafted by artist Mantas Petravičius—create a sense of movement throughout the space. These undulating surfaces are not merely decorative; they are engineered to adapt acoustically, with walls and ceilings that open and close to suit the requirements of different performances, from concerts to plays and meetings.

The realization of this ambitious vision required a bespoke approach. The clay application process, developed exclusively for this project, involved seven meticulous stages, including spraying, patterning, drying, scrubbing, re-spraying, glazing, and conservation. Each step was performed by hand using custom-made tools, ensuring that every surface maintained the intended wave-like motif. The entire process, spanning nine months, was executed on-site, underscoring the dedication to craftsmanship and authenticity.

Technically, the theatre encompasses 10,000 square meters, with an auditorium seating 700 guests. The transformable architecture allows the space to adapt acoustically and visually, ensuring optimal conditions for a variety of events. The continuous clay patterning posed significant challenges, particularly in maintaining coherence across such a vast area despite necessary interruptions during the lengthy installation. Nevertheless, the result is a harmonious, immersive environment that elevates both performer and audience experience.

Recognition for “Clay Moulded” has been significant. The project was awarded the Golden A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its innovative approach and its impact on the fields of art, design, and technology. The theatre not only advances interior architecture but also serves as a model for integrating traditional materials with contemporary performance needs.

“Clay Moulded” exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform public spaces, merging local heritage with forward-thinking solutions. This project invites architects and designers to reconsider the potential of natural materials, demonstrating that innovation often lies in reimagining the familiar.
