Inspired by the transformative journey of recycled steel, the lighting concept draws from Kyoei Steel’s identity and the digital era. Barcode and QR code motifs, illuminated through billet-shaped LED fixtures, symbolize the fusion of manufacturing heritage with digital connectivity. This approach not only highlights the material’s origins but also establishes a visual language that resonates with contemporary office culture.
The project’s unique strength lies in its seamless integration of lighting and architecture. Billet-shaped LED lights are embedded within steel louvers, creating a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow that enhances the texture and structure of recycled steel. This design elevates the industrial aesthetic, turning raw materials into refined architectural elements while reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Advanced lighting control systems enable dynamic adjustments, allowing the workspace to respond to changing natural light throughout the day. This adaptability ensures optimal illumination and energy efficiency, while the interplay between artificial and natural light fosters a vibrant, ever-changing atmosphere. The illuminated barcode and QR code patterns subtly interact with users’ movements, guiding navigation and enriching the spatial experience.
The realization of this design required overcoming significant technical challenges, including the development of billet-shaped LED fixtures that maintain minimalism without sacrificing functionality. Extensive prototyping, regulatory compliance, and thermal management were addressed to achieve a harmonious integration of lighting and structure. Applied research in light modeling and human perception informed the final solution, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and workplace functionality.
Completed between 2022 and 2024, the project stands as a testament to the synergy between innovation and sustainability. The office’s façade, inspired by stacked billets, and the precision-integrated interior lighting, embody Kyoei Steel’s vision for responsible manufacturing and technological advancement. Recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, the design sets a new standard for sustainable architectural lighting in modern workspaces.
Embraced in Recycled Steel demonstrates how thoughtful lighting design can redefine industrial materials, fostering creativity, collaboration, and environmental stewardship within the workplace. This project not only enhances the daily experience of its users but also serves as a model for integrating sustainability and innovation in architectural design.
