Innovative urban hub redefines community spaces for young families

Drawing from the unique landscape of Zhanjiang’s coastal terraced fields, the Zhanjiang Chengfa Runyue Life Lab Center reimagines regional heritage through a modern lens. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with carefully sequenced spaces, fosters a series of interactive environments. Warm, rustic tones—beige, white, and gray—provide a soothing foundation, while vivid orange accents and lush greenery inject vitality, reflecting both the local scenery and a forward-thinking approach to urban living.

This award-winning interior, designed by Beijing Topace Architecture Design Ltd, serves dual purposes as a sales hub and a social gathering space. As the needs of modern families evolve, the center moves beyond traditional commerce, focusing on immersive experiences and community engagement. By integrating elements of local culture with contemporary lifestyle concepts, the Life Lab Center becomes a dynamic stage for city life, strengthening the connection between individuals, neighborhoods, and the broader urban environment.

Sustainability and authenticity are at the core of the project’s realization. The design utilizes locally sourced natural materials such as wood and limestone, treated minimally to preserve their original textures. Terrazzo flooring, enhanced for moisture resistance, and the inclusion of native plants not only improve indoor air quality but also reinforce the center’s ecological philosophy. These choices reflect a commitment to environmental responsibility while maintaining a refined aesthetic.

The spatial layout follows the building’s angular form, employing obtuse fold lines to maximize natural light and create safer, more inviting spaces. The central showcase seamlessly connects to an outdoor interactive area, integrating a stage, fashion store, and café. A distinct exhibition zone offers a tranquil retreat, contrasting with the lively communal spaces. Multifunctional planning and a hybrid traffic flow dissolve traditional boundaries, encouraging spontaneous interaction and adaptability for diverse activities.

Research into the needs of young families revealed a desire for spaces that alleviate daily pressures and foster genuine community spirit. The Life Lab Center responds with an open stage concept, breaking down barriers and promoting social connection. By merging immersive experiences with local cultural elements, the design not only energizes the neighborhood but also contributes to the preservation of urban heritage and sustainable development.
