Frames: Nature-Inspired Wooden Office Redefines Workspace

Michihiro Matsuo’s Osaka office harmonizes architecture with environment and community.

Blending organic design with advanced engineering, Frames by Michihiro Matsuo sets a new benchmark for sustainable and community-oriented office architecture in Japan.

Frames, designed by Michihiro Matsuo and completed in Osaka in December 2024, exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to office architecture. The project draws inspiration from the desire to create workspaces that connect seamlessly with nature and the local environment. Emphasizing large windows and abundant greenery, the design prioritizes openness, employee comfort, and a harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape.

The building’s façade features overlapping, floating window frames that immediately capture attention. This distinctive element not only enhances visual appeal but also serves a functional purpose. Inside, the strategic placement of plants and the unique window configuration ensure privacy for employees while maintaining a bright, open atmosphere. Horizontal eaves at ground level provide a sleek contrast to the upper windows, further integrating the structure into its natural setting.

Frames stands out for its commitment to sustainability through the use of wooden rigid frame construction—a notable departure from the steel structures typically favored for such projects in Japan. Large-section laminated timber and robust metal joints were employed to ensure both strength and safety, addressing the challenges posed by the country’s frequent seismic activity. Structural analysis played a critical role in balancing the open design with the need for earthquake resilience.

Functionality is central to the building’s design. Most workspaces are located above the second floor, where the interplay of window shapes and exterior greenery shields occupants from the view of passersby, enhancing privacy without sacrificing openness. This thoughtful approach extends to the overall layout, which encourages a sense of connection with nature while supporting productivity and well-being.

Research conducted during the project explored the psychological benefits of organic architectural forms and their impact on workplace comfort. Surveys and tours informed the design, aiming to set a standard for next-generation office environments that are both safe and inspiring. The project’s innovative use of wood in a large-scale office, combined with its environmental sensitivity, earned it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2025.

Frames by Michihiro Matsuo demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between sustainability, safety, and aesthetic excellence, offering a model for future office architecture that is both environmentally responsible and deeply connected to its community.
