Golden Radiance: The Artistry of Tokumitsu Taanto Restroom

Kanazawa gold leaf transforms a public restroom into an immersive art space.

Nobuaki Miyashita’s Tokumitsu Taanto reimagines the public restroom as a luminous sanctuary, drawing on the rich heritage of Kanazawa gold leaf to create a space where tradition and innovation converge in a mesmerizing display of light and craftsmanship.

Located in Hakusan, Ishikawa, Japan, the Tokumitsu Taanto restroom stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese traditional crafts. Designed by Nobuaki Miyashita, this unique public restroom elevates a routine activity into an extraordinary sensory experience. The project’s inspiration stems from the desire to translate the cultural significance of Kanazawa gold leaf—a symbol of Kaga culture—into a contemporary spatial encounter. Visitors are enveloped in a golden enclosure, where the interplay of sheen and shadow evolves throughout the day, offering a dynamic and immersive atmosphere.

What sets the Golden Restroom apart is its meticulous use of over 3,000 Kanazawa gold leaf tiles. Each tile, measuring 200mm square, is crafted using the UNESCO-listed Hand-Applied Gold Leaf technique. This process involves layering gold leaf onto textured porcelain surfaces, resulting in a rich, tactile finish that captures and reflects light in captivating ways. The tiles are set against a dark backdrop, and indirect lighting is carefully orchestrated to accentuate the golden glow, creating an ethereal effect reminiscent of a floating chamber.

The technological realization of the design is as impressive as its visual impact. Lighting simulations and detailed studies of gold’s reflective properties informed the strategic placement of fixtures, ensuring that the space is bathed in a serene, ever-changing radiance. The 25-square-meter room, with a ceiling height of 2.90 meters, becomes a living artwork, where visitors feel as though they have stepped into an installation that celebrates both heritage and innovation.

Research played a crucial role in the project’s development. The design team conducted extensive analyses of light angles, reflectivity, and visitor sensory responses to maximize the immersive quality of the space. The result is a harmonious blend of historical technique and modern design, introducing new possibilities for Japanese traditional crafts in contemporary interiors. The project’s success is underscored by its recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its technical excellence and artistic vision.

The Tokumitsu Taanto restroom exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday environments. By integrating Kanazawa gold leaf and advanced lighting strategies, Nobuaki Miyashita has created a space that not only honors cultural heritage but also redefines the boundaries of public architecture. This project invites visitors to pause, reflect, and appreciate the artistry that can be found in the most unexpected places.

As public spaces continue to evolve, Tokumitsu Taanto serves as an inspiring model for how traditional craftsmanship and innovative design can come together to create environments that are both functional and transformative.
